Hey Folks!
Wow, what an experience, and I don't wish any of you ever have to go thru really.
Anyone who read a post I wrote a few months back may remember that I had to have a kidney transplant (diabetic complications), and that my Nephew was a match and offered one of his too me. Well I didn't want to go that route unless absolutely needed, but no match came out of the transplant listings so I finally had to accept his offer.
Had the operation on Dec 4th, and as a Paramedic who knows full well about the procedure and recovery, it still knocked the crap outta me. I had over 500 hours of OR and ER rotations during training and continuing ED so I thought I knew what to expect but it's still impossible to know fully until you go thru it personally.
I only hope I can get some years of use from it before that frikkin Diabetes monster eats this one up too. Someone really needs to find a way to kickstart the pancreas back into action soon, diabetes is considered Pandemic in North America today and is the most commonly diagnosed disease in the world. Thing is, the pancreas still works in most cases but it becomes "blind" to the body's glucose levels and doesn't react properly, so as I see it there MUST be a way of getting it working again...(stem cells)
Well, I have some energy back already but not as much as I had hoped and for some reason my glucose control is completely whacked out now, and the meds aren't doing what they used to lately. I'm almost triple what I used to need and they still aren't doing the job, that's scary cause even the specialist is a tad perplexed by this.
I'm hoping to get in more now that the dialysis is done with, and maybe even get back to helping solve some problems for folks.
Holy crow...only 3 more days till X-mas...wow. Sure sneaks up on you eh
Happy Holidays Everyone!!
Dave
