External Hard Drive Hindering Hibernate Mode

I have a Seagate Free Agent External Hard Drive 500G, I have had it for almost a month now, if not more, backing up videos and other various data. But I just realized today that my computer has not been properly going into hibernate. I use to walk away for 1 hour+ and it would automatically go into hibernate but now it does not and I believe it is because of the external hard drive.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I could get my computer to successfully go into hibernate with this usb external hard drive connected? And while I am posting I wanted to bring up the issue of my computer not shutting off on occasion (This is before I had the external hard drive). Most the time I tell the computer to shut off and it does so fine but on occasion the screen shuts off but the OS keeps going and the comp does not shutoff so I must do it manually or reset and hit shut down again.

The External hard drive does not support x64 I found out today but it supports vista x32 so it will not allow me to up date the device, if that would even help. When I bought it reviews by users said they were using x64 with it so I thought it would work fine and it has so far except the updating and hibernate mode.

Hi Lollies,

It is quite probable that your power saving options are set to tell your computer to wake up on an external prompt. Take a look at Brink's tutorial here

What is the setting for USB

Currently set to disabled, I enabled it and tried hibernate but it did the same thing. My computer and external hard drive continued to run while the display shut off.

No, Disabled is the default. Something is keeping them "awake". It might be search, although I don't know. I don't use hibernate as I have had major problems with "waking" the system in Vista. There is a hotfix for some hibernation problems (including some USB fixes) in Service Pack 1. Is your install updated to the latest service pack

Try this.

1) Control Panel --> System and Maintenance --> System --> Device Manager.
2) Right click the suspect device
3) Properties
4) See if it has a Power Management Tab.
5) If so, then remove the tick next to: 'Allow this device to wake up the computer'.

Another thing to look at is the Task Scheduler. See what tasks could stop hibernation. Delayed write is a culprit, as is Indexing. Change the device properties to allow Quick Removal

I have had problems with hybrid sleep, not being able to get it to respond and wake back up and having to force shutdown.

I have SP1 and have never had any problems waking up my computer until I added the external USB hard drive which made it so I can't put it a sleep, not wake it up.

Norm I gave that a try previously and there is no power option and it is already optimized. It is listed under Hard Drives and it appears as if there is nothing else I can change, even from the program that came with the drive.

Maybe I just have to unplug it every time I believe that I will be using hibernate =(

It is possible that write caching is enabled on the drive, which would keep Windows from putting the drive in a sleep state to prevent write errors....

So I realized that my computer will not sleep while the power options are on High Performance, while Balanced is the chosen power option then everything shuts down fine. From what I have read there is no sure fix as to why High Performance will not go into sleep?

As far as I can tell I fixed the external hard drive so it works properly when put to sleep though I do not remember High Performance not allowing me to go into sleep mode.

Ahh, then that explains it - yeah, the High performance mode is the same as the old Always On mode in XP and 2000.

I suppose it was remiss on our parts to not actually ask which plan you were using - sorry about that.
