super cool dual boot shortcut

ok so here's my idea. I have a dual boot setup (first XP, then VistaX64 over top so as to use the vista boot loader) I was picking my teacher's brain about how to do this to cure my super laziness lol.

I would like to skip the boot loader screen all together. i know vista doesnt use a boot.ini, but it still has a file designated to do the same thing. what i would like to do is write a batch file designated as a shortcut in vista that will tell the machine to reboot into xp. then when im done using it i could just do a normal reboot and it would automatically boot back into vista. using that batch file for whenever i want to play with some older software. i suck at writing scripts so could anyone please enlighten me? i know all this work would only save me like 30 seconds of boot time but i feel it would be worth it and its definitely an interesting idea so please feel free to give your 2 cents  thanx:D

Hi,

As far as I know it runs as an icon in the system tray of each of your operating systems, and rather than using Start Menu - Restart, you click this and choose what OS will boot from a list and it will then reboot and start that OS ( I assume it works by setting the default OS each time it's used )

You can of course use EasyBCD to set your default OS this appears a more user frendly way of doing this on a reboot by reboot basis

thanks man this is super helpful as far as rebooting. the only thing that is unclear is skipping the boot manager screen from cold boot. which is the other main reason for doing this :D

You could also just avoid having to boot into XP altogether, and if you really do need to use it, you rather just load a Virtual PC with Windows XP in order to run that older software you mentioned.

It has the advantage that you don't have to leave Vista to be able to use XP.

Hi,

OK have had a little time to play with the app, It is used to set the default OS to boot by right click in the tray and also has the option to "Reboot on Selection". Which when set will change the default OS and reboot mediately.

As for controlling the boot from cold, if you wait the default OS will be started automatically, the problem with this is the default wait period is set to 30 seconds, and in theses days of "instant on" that is too long to wait (it is for me anyway :D ), What I have done is set the delay time to 4 seconds which I find is a good compromise between delay and being able to select the OS required during boot. This may be set using either MSconfig or EasyBCD .

You could, if you wish, set this to Zero, to remove all delay, but would advise against this as you never know if a problem arises and you need to manually change at boot .

As I've said I find 4 seconds suits my needs but you may want to, use iReboot and, set it to 2 or 3 to provide a little delay for emergencies :geek:

Hope this explains and helps :D

thanks thats a good idea too. i may end up setting it to 0 but i guess ill find out later on today. but you do make a good point leaving a little bit of time in there in case of an emergency lol. i hate the fact ive had to reinstall due to stupid mistakes so im going to take my time until i figure out the perfect setup lol
