Newbie asking for assistance.

I am new to this forum so be gentle! I have no doubt there is a simple answer to my question, maybe I'm just not simple enough to find it by myself?

Anyway, I would like to know how to COPY photo files, folders and individual files, to an external hard drive without having to backup all the photos on my system.
