New Vista User - Need To Fix "Documents" Folder

New Member
I have a second hard drive, D: I relocated my Personal Documents folder to this D: drive. I must have pointed to the drive instead of a folder on the drive. Now I can't get it back to the default "C:\User\Charles\Documents". I right click on the drive, properties, location, restore default. It shows the right location. Click ok. Say yes to moving the files. Then get error "Failed to build the list of regular subfolders under "D:\System Volume Information".
Can anyone help me?

Thanks for pointing me to those links. I had read through them once, but I went back & looked at them again. I used the manual regedit. I got the Documents folder back under my name at the top of the tree. The folder icon was yellow so I did the .ini file thing & now it's green again. The only thing is I can't see the folder under C:\Users\Charles. If I unhide everything it's there. If I hide things, it's gone. The other folders are there. Just the Documents folder is hidden. The attributes look the same on the Documents folder & the others. Any ideas?

O, I think you're saying you cannot see the folder called *Charles* under Users unless you show all folders, right?

Under C:\Users\Charles I can see all my folders, except "Documents".
At the top of the tree I can see all the folders, including "Documents".
If I unhide files & system files, then I can see "Documents" under C:\Users\Charles.
I can't see any difference between the "Documents" folder & all the other folders.

If you can only see it when it is 'unhidden' then somehow Vista thinks it is 'hidden'. This could be because the attributes of the folder are set to hidden, or because the folder no longer actually belongs to your username, and instead is associated with another user....

Does it ask for administrative permissions to access the folder? If not, then it is not the latter....

It doesn't ask for any permissions. On all the other folders, under properties, the "Hidden" check box is not checked. On the properties of the "Documents" folder, the "Hidden" check box is checked, but grayed out. You can't uncheck it. That's probably the problem. But I don't know how to un gray it.

I think I just created a new folder, like any other folder. I had it pointing to D: drive. Then went into the registry & changed it to point to c:\Users\Charles\Documents'
I think I created it because I didn't think it was there. But it was realy there, but hidden.

OK, To move those folders' locations, you simply right click on the desired folder you want to move, pick the location tab, and from there you can point it to a new existing folder anywhere on your system that you have access to. I do this every time I install Vista on my personal machine because I keep all my special folders on a separate HD - so if the OS gets hosed my data is intact.

I think it might be hiding itself because of the registry trick - have you tried using the method I just outlined to move it somewhere else, then see if you can unhide the original folder, and then move it back?
