Due to various rement programs and fear of viruses, I would like to wipe clean the "C" drive and restore the system to its original out-of-box settings using either the "D" partition or the system produced recovery disks.

You can use either. Make sure to save any thing of value to you on cds/dvds. Then just follow on screen prompts and that's it.

and what if someone installs windows 7 to that "cleaned" drive C and after sometime wants to restore that windows vista from drive D???

Usually, if Seven is installed to a Hard Drive with Vista, the recovery partition is lost. Most members just format the entire drive and install using the clean install method.

If the original partition structure has not been changed it may work, who manufactured the PC, what make is it so we can post the instructions to give it a try, you've got nothing to lose.
