Vista Freezes - USB Drivers loaded in safe mode

Vista boots and initially seems to work and then within a few minutes the USB devices - keyboard and mouse are disabled. None of the ports work. Must reboot with power button. On reboot I choose safe-mode and it immediately started to install drivers for the USB devices. So it seems that for some reason the USB devices where disabled on a normal boot - maybe as some additional software or services started to run?

On a side note My bios has ACPI turned on and wake with USB turned on.
I turned them off temporarily to see if that helps. Can you suggest any fixes - bios settings or ways to test what programs are causing the the problem in vista.

I had this computer running without this problem before reloading vista. same USB devices. I relaoded and changed from raid to ahci for the drives. I did make some bios setting changes that are different but vista is supposed to support these - like acpi

Fresh clean install - hard drive was written full of zero's prior to install. Bios had achi enabled in install however vista installation hung on the first run until I switched to ide then it installed properly. Then I followed microsoft instruction to change vista to ahci then ahci is working. But I believe this is an unrelated problem.

That is simply a weird occurrence. Is this a completely virgin install, as in no other apps installed at all? Can we get some specs on your computer? One of the reasons I ask is that I had no install issues the many many times I have installed Vista with AHCI enabled....

An additional piece of information is that when I was in bios just now looking at settings my ability to arrow through settings froze. I have a usb keyboard - the light was on but the ability to scroll stopped and then resumed. Keyboard works in another computer.

COmputer: MSIx48c, Intele6750, 4gb memory, three sata drives, 1 ide dvd drive, 1 floppy ide, vista64, hauppage 1800 tv tuner - comes with usb IR Reciever but I unplugged this USB device and still got the freeze. Actually had media center running with live tV and media center froze too so it is not just the USB that froze

Hmmm - disable or remove McAfee (if you're paranoid about malware, also disconnect it from the Internet) and then see if you get the freezes...

I suspect the McAfee firewall component is causing you fits.
