Mayday! User account hidden?

I am really unsure of this and I have seen some similar threads. Apparently, the attributes to my User folder were adjusted. This has changed the items on my desktop and affected my ability to get my docs and pictures.

My user folder is prop'ing at 6 gb, so I know the data is still there. However, I cannot access it. I saw a few threads that mention changing Read only and hidden, but I don't know what to trust.

I tried creating an Admin account, and setting ownership to (MyUsername), but the items are nowhere to be found.

Hello ALZ, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You can do steps 9 to 13 in this tutorial to set the read only attribute back to each user folder.

If this does not help, then you might do a System Restore using a restore point dated before this problem.

Thank you for the reply but that does not work. Is there any way the AppData folder and sub-folders may be hidden?

Again, there is over 6Gb of data in the "User" folder, yet those pics, docs, and desktop items are inaccessible. Any leads toward restoring the attributes and what they should be???

The AppData folder is hidden so you will need to goto folder options and dot show hidden files an folders.

Thank you for the help so far. My saga continues and I proved that hindsight is 20-20. I followed the Brink's UAC directions and I was unable to solve the problem.

I went to the User\AppData folder and removed the Read-only attributes. Viola! The "covert folders and files" now reappeared on the desktop. I can see them, however, they are nearly transparent, and I proved they are Read-Only.

I also found out that Firefox is not working.

Soooo, I have this issue nearly licked. Do I reverse course and "attrib -r" the folders using UAC?

With this many issues, you might do a System Restore using a restore point dated before this problem to hopefully fix it.

Thanks for the quick reply. Sys Restore doesn't seem to do anything, but I'm getting there. It seems those icons on the desktop were HIDDEN. Hmmmm. Also checking the props of the Pics and Music files show they are hidden as well.

I started changing their props. FF is fixed already. The FF folder in \Username\AppData was READ-ONLY. Amazing! Simply removed that attribute and its back.

Not sure where my next problem is going to pop up, but thanks for the help. These forums are definitely a valuable resource.

If you have not already, you can remove the hidden attribute from them from the link below, or use the attrib -h file path command on them.
