I suppose it really depends on the context. Although in most cases, "common shell" is likely refering to the DLL libraries that provide shell functions and resources, such as icons and list view styles amoungst others.

I'm going to take a wild guess here, and assume that you're seeing an error message of some kind that is referring to "Windows Shell Common", or something like that. Some more details from you would help...

Do you mean the Windows Shell Command if so this allows you to access the special folders in vista quickly from the command line or desktop search. It also allows you to recreate such folders that have been accidentally deleted or corrupted

normally when we download a file, we right click the file n click on the properties, we can change the program we use to open the file, i use many program to open the file, but still it cant. now i just want to change it back to the program ( window shell commor)

any idea out there??

What file type are you trying to reset? JPG? MP3? AVI? But try this:
  1. Click the "Start Orb"
  2. Click "Default Programs"
  3. Click the "Set your default programs" option
  4. Select the program on the left, then either click "Set this program as default" or "Choose defaults for this program"

Dzomlija, i think i didnt explain the problem fully well.

do u know about hjsplit?
i downloaded 8 files which is 'avi' files. so i use my player to open all the files. player cant read. so i use ie to open the files, i also dont know y i do that lol... then i realise that these 8 files need to this 'hjsplit' to join all them up before my player can read it.

right now, i cant join those files together cause i mess it up by usin other program.

right now i just want to change it back which is call the "window shell commor"

now can understand what i'm talkin about???? lol....:D

Are you experiencing this problem with only these 8 files (It may be that the file themselves are corrupted), or with all AVI files?

But as for joining them together, try using Any Video/DVD Converter - The versatile video converter for iPod, PSP, Zune, cell phones and more. It can also, in some cases, repair damaged or corrupted video files.

yeah, only to these 8 files, this is what i encounter recently only. u can find this "window shell commor" in your media player files also. u go to your media player file location, there is a file name this 'wmssetsup.ceb'. u can check it out. this is just 1 of it.

I've just finished a search of my hard drives, including hidden files and folders, and did not find anything even remotely similar to "wmssetsup.ceb", and a google also returned no results.

Bearing that in mind, I'd suggest you run an extensive scan for virus and malware on your computer. If that returns no results, then that file is likely related to the program you where trying to use to join the AVI files. But that this problem exists only with 8 very specific files is an indication of file corruption.

Try downloading them again....

haha... did not find anything???? your files at your hard drive have some 'icon' some represent a folder n some represent a note pad or some text document... u look at the icon that looks like a blank paper. right click on that, click on properties, on the general 2nd line where u can change the program to open up the file.

maybe u can try this n understand what i talkin about..

Sure, but that doesn't help to find out with which program that file must be opened. The "Blank Piece of Paper" icon represents files that have no associated program - in other words, an unknown file type.

I ran a quick test, and created a file "test.ceb" on my computer. An when I double-clicked it, I got this:
openwith.jpg​

It therefore stands to reason that "Windows Shell Common Dll" is used when opening unknown file types. If this is the behaviour that you are getting, then there are no problems.

You need something like HJSplit to join and split files. Some are in winrar RAR format. The ones with 001, 002 etc at the extension are HJSplit style files.

if i accidentally used a program to open the file before joining all up, what should i do. i re-download the file many times but is still the same. any way i can default it

Should not matter. You need to get the proper program to join them. Make sure you run anti-virus on them. Many of them contain trojans.

Once you install hjsplit, the 001 file is the default file you choose for target. It should join them back to the movie file. I use it with no issues.

You need SHELL.DLL located in Windows/Sytem32 . This will change the ' Open With ' back to Windows Shell Common Dll . Although it does look like Windows Shell Commor because you cant see all the words . Hope this helps .

but then, what if i make a file called test.java then right click --> properties --> (opens with) - change --> notepad. it opens the file using notepad but how can i change it back to the way it was before, there is no option where it says open with "windows shell common". please reply if you have any information.
