Right-click context menu loads SLOW!

Hey guys,

Recently I've noticed that when I right click on certain files or the desktop, that it would load the context menu after about 1 second. I know this isn't much but it should not take that long for something that small.

I went ahead and removed many items from the context menu and the desktop and all other files load the context menu almost instantly.

My problem is that .exe files still take 1-2 seconds to load their context menu. I tried removing almost ALL the options in the context menu and that did not even help.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Thanks for the help. I've already looked over those pages and they did help get rid of the many context menu's I did not want. It helped with the context menu loading of the desktop and other files such as .rar and .doc but still the .exe files load slow no matter what I do. Is this the same for everyone?

Is there something about .exe files that just make them load slower?

No, it's not normal. My exe file context menu opens with at the same speed as the other menus do.

I would continue disabling context menus items temporarily with ShellExView until you find the culprit. Concentrate on the menu items displayed in the .exe file context menu.

I'm not sure if this will have any affect on this, but you might try the tutorial below just to see if it can help any. It speeds up the delay time and helps menus open faster. Either way, you other menus will open faster.

I have already reduced the menu show delay time and it definitely worked. The problem still exists with .exe files though. Which extension should I be looking at for .exe files in ShellExView? I see ".exe drop target" and ".cpl, .dll, .exe, etc.." I've tried disabling them both but it did nothing.

It's not easy to pinpoint it just for .exe files, but when you find a Contect Menu type in ShellExView, look at it's description to see if it may be a context menu item that appears with the .exe files. Sometimes you may have to disable every single Context Menu item before finding the bad one.

I used ShellExView and I disabled ALL the context menu items. The context menu delay for the .exe files was GONE! I found out it was caused by WinRAR even though the .exe context menu has no WinRAR options. I went into WinRAR and went to Options > Security tab and prevented it from extracted .exe files but it still did not fix it. I don't understand why the .exe files context menu is being delayed by a shell that isn't even associated with it.

Also, .rar files use the WinRAR shell and they have NO delay when right-clicked. It seems very odd that .rar files don't have delay but .exe ones do. Anyone have any ideas?

Strange. You might uninstall and dump WinRAR and use the free 7-Zip instead. It supports RAR files and a lot of others. I have not had any problems with it.
