" Format disc" request when using 2gb mp3 player on xp

Hi,

I have a 2gb mp3 player , ok its actually a fake ipod shuffle but works the same as any typical small flash mp3 player (no need for i tunes, simply open the folder and cut and paste files)

It works fine on xp.
When i try and open it on my laptop (Vista) it says i need to format the disc.

Is there anyway getting around this, would formatting the disk on vista do anything? I am conscious aswell that given its an mp3 player that if If I format it that i will lose any software required for it to function as a player.

Any Ideas???

It's possible that the flash drive is losing integrity, and may eventually fail. That's the worst case scenario.

Or, the internal file system (very likely FAT32) is becomming corrupted. Question - Whether with XP or Vista, are you using the "Safely remove hardware" icon before removing the flash drive/mp3 player from the usb port? I ask because I've seen far too many people in my line of work who have trashed their flash drives by just pulling the drive out...

Seeing as it works ok on XP, try plugging it into an available XP rig, then copy all the music files to a temporary location on your hard disk.

Perform a full CHKDSK on the drive. If CHKDSK reports any errors, repair them, then try the drive in Vista again.

If you then still have a problem with it in Vista, then have you looked to the manufacturer for a driver update to make it work properly in Vista?


If it STILL does not work, insert the flash drive back into the XP box, and format from there. I can't be 100% certain, but you'll likely need to use the FAT file system. Consult with the device manual/manufacturer for details. This is a last resort option, which may or may not render it unusable even in XP, so use caution!
