Vista home premium x64 running slow

Hi there

i am new here

i have recently purchased a new HP pavilion M9373 computer it has the following spec:

Intel core 2 quad Q9300 2.5ghz 1333Mhz FSB, 6MB
vista home premium 64bit
1024MB geforce 9800 GT graphics
4GB RAM
1TB hard drive

so overall it is a really good spec! it cost a lot of money to buy so i expect it to be pretty speedy with vista!

i am doing a degree in computing so i know a fair bit about computers!!

this has just reall confused me though!!

i dont understand why it takes such a long time to load windows up!!

i have read a few posts on here about some computers taking 15 seconds to load!! mine is more like anything up to 5 mins from power on to usable desktop!!

please can someone help me as to waht i could do!?!?

i want this computer to be as fast as it should be!!
