Solved Locating and renaming files

My document files seem to be named incorrectly and I cannot seem to rectify it. An example of my problem is: I save a file into Documents and the name comes up as
C:\User\Lis\Documents\Documents\Documents\Documents\Documents\Documents\Documents\Documents\File Name (Currently there are 13 Document folders, a similar number of photos and contact files).
I have tried deleting the empty files and lost them, then I tried to copy and paste the files into to the previous document folder with the same result.

Your folders are too deep for windows to handle correctly. I saw the same problem that was created by an end user on my windows 2003 file server. How'd you pull off mucking up your folder hiearchy like that? I would like to know because I can't even duplicate what some of you users are doing. It's actually amusing and befuddling at the same time.

Hello Lis, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It sounds like your Documents folder has had it's default location changed and something went wrong causing these multiple copies of it being created. Double check using Option Two in tutorial to make sure that the Documents (Personal in regisitry) has it's default location %USERPROFILE%\Documents set for it. Hopefully after this, your files will return.

I successfully renamed the files through the registery. The files were all restored to my user documents, half of them were the yellow files, these could not be changed through the personalization process. I solved this by using my search folder to find the icons and cut and pasted them back, and after a couple of days they are back as default. Except, I have two music icons, and if delete one the other goes back to the yellow, any ideas? also the Bluetooth Folder remains as a yellow. Should this folder be kept in My user files?

Your welcome Lis,

I would copy any files that you have in the Music folder somewhere else temporarily, then delete the two Music folders. Afterwards, restore it using the tutorial to see if you will only have one again.

The Bluetooth folder is not in the user folders by default in Vista. This must have been added by some 3rd party program. This is why it's folder is yellow instead of green. I would leave it where it's at. Moving or deleting it would most likely cause problems with the program that uses it, or the program will just recreate it again anyways.

Thanks again, the Music Folder appears to be in place. Now my Downloads folder has disappeared. I noticed that when I went into the regedit.. (nothing happens when I use the Shell Command) that there was not a Download, or Links folder, I think the Cache folder relates to Download, where do I find the Links folder?
At the moment I cannot find an the Downloads file after a thorough search, it was there until I downloaded a couple of things from the net these were directed to User Document folder. Do I have to change any settings to get downloads to go directly to the Download file (that is once have restored it)

UPDATE:
Follow up to previous email re Download & Links folder. I changed my settings in my web-browser and the Download folder has reappeared, and I suspect the same will happen with the Links file. So I guess I am cancelling my previous query.

Hi Lis,

It sounds like your Downloads folder had became your second Music folder. Double check all of your user folders in the registery (Option Two, step 5) to make sure that they all have their default locations set to them as in that screenshot below step 5. The long number under (Default) in the Name column is the one for the Downloads folder. This should restore all of them for you.

I think it worked the music file has not reappeared.
I did locate the Downloads in the Internet folder and modified it, all OK.
I still can't find where the Links folder is located-my Bookmarks do not appear to listed in it. Do I have to change settings?
Out of interest I found out that by checking the properties of each user folder, that I could restore the defaults from there rather going through the shell command or registry, much easier than the way I did it ie searching, cutting and pasting. All a huge learning curve. Thanks for your help Lis

Your welcome Lis.

The restore default option from the properties window does not always work like it does by editing the registry, but I will add it to the tutorial as a option that can be used for the other user folders that cannot be edited by the registry.

Hi,
Folder are now all OK but I cannot find any of the files, these were not deleted they just disappeared, hence the reason I contacted you. I understand that they may be somewhere on the hard drive, is there any way I can restore them? Hope you can help. Thanks, Lis

Ok, we will use Advanced Search to see if we can find them

In Advanced Search, set it for:

All (step 3)
Everywhere (step 4)
Do step 7 for a thorough non-indexed search
Use *.(file extension) or (step 8) for a file name to search with.
NOTE: Substitute (File extension) with the actual file extension of a file you are searching for. For example, I would type *.txt for a text file to search for all txt files. If you know a file name that was in that folder, then use it instead to help narrow the search results.
Do step 11.

Now look through the search results to see if you can find the missing file to expose the location of the folder that it is in along with all the other missing files.
