Can I boot to an external Hard drive?

Hey so I am planning on putting ubuntu on an external hard drive. If I install Ubuntu on it, can I boot to it? I don't want to change any settings in bios, I just want to boot to ubuntu occasionally.

That would depend on the interface type of the external hard drive and the bios booting options on your motherboard. If your system is not compatable with that configuration, you could make a partion on your main drive and set up for dual boot.

Can you tell me if I can with my bios, I was going to partition but I would rather not, I have a intel dg965WH mobo. I am 99% sure I can but I always like to make sure on a vista forum first haha.

First, you need to looks at what options you have an external hard drives. USB, Network, external ports from the motherboard controller. Then you need to access your bios and see what options are available to you.

actually I will do a dual boot. How should I partition my primary/only hd? I don't want to loose the files in it so what program should I use to partition it.

Okay but,I want to dual boot ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition and I wanted to partition my primary and only hard drive that have vista installed. How would I partition it safely, without using the built in vista partition manager because that doesn't let me pick the size I want.
