The lack of advanced installation options is a crippling problem for any user. The need to turn on and off features during installation is paramount to a good installation for advanced users. When it come to upgrading from the OEM software package installed on your computer to another version of Vista be prepared to reinstall all of your software!
Vista’s start menu is one of the problems. You would think that the people that designed the window installer subsystem would have thought about giving you the option of where and under what heading to put programs shortcuts by now.
No ZIP file handler as part of Windows explorer is just plain stupid. The loss of the Windows explorer toolbar is a disaster for those people who do not have any right click shell enhancement such as FileMenu Tools.
By now you would think the designers that work for Microsoft would have given you different user modes to switch to. Each mode would start or stop service depending on the user’s needs or security clearance level. The idea they had was good; but poorly implemented. User account controls is a shot at it but not the answer for your average user.
All of the graphics in the world do not make a good operating system! I run WindowBlinds, Yz Shadow, Visual Task Tips, TopDesk, WinRoll, Iconoid, and UberIcon to give Xp a better graphics package than Vista!
There have been many customizations of Xp on my system to give it a better look and feel. I have done the same with Vista. But after 7 days of only Vista and all of it’s failures I returned to using Xp as my primary operating system.
