I've heard that using your computer as a standard user (not admin) is more secure (and I'd agree), but is the added protection worth it to get bitched at each time you try to do something (install, uninstall, etc etc, anything you need admin rights to do)?

I run on only the one account I made in the beginning. and thats the admin account. I probably shouldn't. but I am. not sure.. Meh oh well. this is ok right?

I run as an admin and I think this is the best thing to do unless you have more than one person using your computer.

I think either if you run Admin is just as secure as standard would be, the big difference are the permissions on the Admin.

Hi Ryuho,

Running with the default administrator account is basically the same as running with a Standard account. They both act the same until you are asked for permission (UAC) to allow a program or action to run with administrator rights. In a Standard aaccount, you must provide the default administrator account's password to approve. In the default administrator account, you just click Continue to approve.

I personally just use the default administrator account with UAC turned on.

I use the built in admin with UAC off.

I dont need the UAC. With all the security and HIPS running UAC is bloat.

I pass every AV and antimalware scan that matters. And thats all that matters.

How often do you need admin rights?

Anything(cookies, malware, spyware, etc) you download from the net, gets to run with the same rights as the person that downloaded it.

ever remember having your IE homepage changed, by a site?

It'd the first door that's left open,!! why? ego thing?

There are three other acounts (my brother & 2 sisters), my brother has an Administrator account to because he knows the difference between the Internet and spyware.

My sisters on the other hand have a Standard account, because they don't know anything about PCs :p.

This thread got me thinking about UAC and how often the UAC confirmation dialog gets in the way.

When I first setup Vista and was installing all the software I wanted to use, the UAC confirmation dialogs were a royal pain. So I set UAC to automatically "Elevate without Prompting".

Now that I have my system configuration all sorted out, I will continue to use a standard admin account but I have changed the UAC behavior from "Elevate without Prompting" to "Prompt for Consent".

If the UAC confirmation dialogs get irritating, I can always switch back. In the short time since the change was made, I have seen few UAC confirmation dialogs. It seems like a small "inconvenience" price to pay for the protection provided.

Anyway, so far, so good.....
