strange vista system slowdown

Hello all,

I've built a new pc recently which has been running fine until today when i noticed launching certain applications was causing a massive slow down.

Specs first

Vista Home premium x64
Kaspersky internet security
E8500 cpu
Gigabyte x48t-dq6
xfx 8800gtx
4gb ocz ddr3 ram (forgot the timings)
lg hd-dvd/blu-ray sata drive
lg dvd/rw ide drive
1tb samsung sata drive
2x western digital 250gb drives running in a raid1 mirrored array

My problem is when ever i try to launch certain applications it causes an extreme slow down of the system and high cpu usage, after 30+ seconds the system goes back to normal and the program responds fine. Seems to be a bit slow in loading as well.

Programs affected include winamp (latest), nero 8, windows media player 11, powerdvd, right clicking on hard drives and opening properties but not accessing the hdd's

Programs which aren't affected include media player classic, open office, ie7, firefox 3, vlc player


What I have tried so far

I have been messing around with my codecs recently trying to get thumbnail previews of the .avi files on my pc which suceeding in by installing ffdshowx64 so i uninstalled this and the 64bit vista codec pack to no avail.

I disabled kaspersky but that was no good either.

I also disabled my raid array but that had no effect

Hi, Vaughane, and welcome to the forums....

Did you install the Vista Codecs *and* the x64 components? If so uninstall both, reboot, try the apps - if they load fine (but possibly with errors) then install the latest Vista Codec package and the x64 components again.

It's my understanding that if you install the Vista codec pack you have to remove all other codecs from the machine.

Doh! good call FUMZ - I misread it to say *uninstall* ffdshow and install Vista Codec Package....

Hi, thanks for replying,

i'd already tried uninstalling the the vista64 codec pack and the seperate ffdshow64 followed by a reboot (the ffdshow version included in the vista codec pack isn't the 64 bit version so i deselected it from the codec pack and installed it seperately) but it hasn't done any good.

I can't understand why its only affecting some programs and especially why its slowing down when i try to get my hard drive properties up??? WEIRD

It's also my understanding that 64-bit users have to install both versions in order for things to work properly. That the ffdshow isn't "the 64-bit version" isn't important... afaik.

Hi Vaughana,

You need both versions of the Vista codec pack since Vista 64bit comes with both 32bit Windows Media and 64bit Windows Media ;)

I'm still not sure if its a codec issue, as i would have thought that uninstalling everything would have solved the problem.

I have just discovered that it especially slows down when trying to burn files to dvd with windows, however when i look in the taskmanager no processes are using excessive amounts of the CPU or memory although the CPU usage meter is very high
