A program can't display a message on your desktop

this comes up when i click on: show me the message:

Runtime error

This program has requested the runtime to end in an unusal way.

windows\SMINST\BLService.exe

how can I get this annoying persistent nuisance to stop coming up?

I was dragged kicking and screaming into Vista and truthfully am almost liking it (or not hating it as much as I thought I would).

HOWEVER, this is the kinda crap that will make me regret it.

My Computer

I have no idea what BLService.exe is? It's worth noting that a google search points to your two threads on the first page; hits # 3 and 4. The first two hits suggest it's malware? I have no BLService, or BL Service on my machine, running or disabled.

Microsoft.com isn't helping any either; nothing on BLService or BL Service. Have you run anti-virus/malware/trojan scans?

What program are you using that's giving this message?

I wish I knew, but the BLservice.exe does exist in that directory (wish we could post screenshots) with:
BLauncher.exe
BLService.exe
CD Creator.exe
GetKeyboardLayout
INSTALL_APP.EXE
Recguard.exe
Restore7.exe
RMC_AR32.exe
SetWinReLanguage.exe
virtdisk.exe

and a bunch of DLL's

My Computer

You're really going to have to help yourself out a bit here; you're giving us little to no information whatsoever. Given this lack of useful information, it's virtually impossible to figure out what the problem is.

You can post pics; in fact, you were given two ways to go about it in your other thread on this issue: http://www.vistax64.com/general-dis...s-one-post-vista-error-messages-problems.html

I believe you that BLService exists on your services menu, so please believe me when I tell you that it does not on mine. Microsoft has nothing on BLService; therefore, it's not a Vista service. You got that installing some other program. I asked if there was a specific program you were using when you got this error... still waiting on a response? A list of what you've installed may also be helpful?

Perhaps it would be best to clear some of that crap you have loaded up in msconfig? Perhaps it would also be good to run a virus scan... as mentioned before?

I'm guessing none of the services/start menu items you've listed are essential (not a guess really): BLauncher.exe, BLService.exe, CD Creator.exe, GetKeyboardLayout, INSTALL_APP.EXE, Recguard.exe, Restore7.exe, RMC_AR32.exe, SetWinReLanguage.exe, virtdisk.exe... all crap.

In fact, it's probably one of these services/start menu items which is causing the problem? Have you disabled them all and seen what happens? If not, then give it a shot.

Ok, I am not new to computers (first experience was with punch cards), just to Vista.
I tried most other venues before coming here, google, etc.

This is on a HP TX2000 series tablet PC and I suspect may be HP crap. If I could figure out what program was causing this message, well I guess I wouldn't have come in here, but I certainly would disable it and see what happened.

I was hoping that somebody would know the answer based on the program/service name and they had had the exact same experience.

I stated I wished you could post a screenshot meaning directly from the forum as is possible in many others.

but in honor of your opinion, I have renamed the SMINST directory and will see if anything happens or stops happening

I would not worry so much about "honoring my opinion"; worry about listening to and following direction.

... If you want people to see the picture, you're going to have to host it online somewhere... like imageshack.com
Hi, drumtrucker, and welcome to the forums.

BTW - when you want to post and image, you can also upload them here (within reason - don't try my 8 MB desktop pic :P) and then use the paperclip icon to show it in your post - but you cannot use the fast reply, you have to use the advanced mode reply, and you have to manually upload (using manage attachments below the message entry box) and then use the paperclip after uploading it.

I think that's enough on the topic of pictures?

To your problem. I'm not sure that simply renaming a folder is going to stop those services from running? How's that working for ya so far?

My idea was to stop the services and see how the machine runs, sound good? Go into msconfig and uncheck all the crap you listed a few posts ago to prevent them from being loaded at startup. Then bring up the services.msc menu.... look for all the items you just unchecked in msconfig and set them to manual, at least for now. Reboot the machine and try and recreate the error.

I can already tell you that you've got some crap software on that machine, really crappy crap of the crappiest kind. I hate software that feels it should be automatically loaded when you boot the machine... hate it. Clearly, that CD writing software you have is of that type... and did I mention it was crap? :sarc:

I would personally take all the crap off that HP installed.... because it's crap. Then head to the Software section of this forum. There isn't anything that HP has that you can't find here: http://www.vistax64.com/software/115872-free-software-list-vista.html or here: http://www.vistax64.com/software/139514-short-list-utilities-vista.html

This list has the added value of not being crap. :D

If you're hell-bent on finding out exactly which piece of crap is causing the problem, then you can one by one recheck the items in msconfig, reboot and try and recreate the error. Eventually, having loaded enough crap, I'm sure you'll come across the guilty stinker.

Sametime 3.0 Community Server Reference: Interface BLService

If you have Lotus products, and especially Lotus Same Time, which perhaps your office / work might use, then you have BLService. Second link in Google.

Ironically, the first link in Google is from Prevx - and the first time this was reported was yesterday....

And it looks like more than a few of those others are corporate related files as well....

Either that or you have been hacked and scanned and invaded really really quickly.

however, seeing as your original posts says
I was dragged kicking and screaming into Vista and truthfully am almost liking it (or not hating it as much as I thought I would).
I am gonna go out on a limb and guess that this is a work machine?

Ok.
Is the SMINST directory known to anyone as something?
I renamed it hoping that any reference to it during bootup would fail, because it would not be able to find it.

I would be very happy to just stop getting the errors. I have been getting them a lot less than I used to, I mean before the directory rename. I thought they were gone, but started up again, which led me to come here.

My Computer

If that service is in that directory it needs to be there - and you never said whether this is a corporate machine or not and if Same Time is installed or not - I mean, think about it

SMINST - Sametime Messageing INSTall directory.....

cannot find this program or service in startup, but, in the registry it is referred to in key:

hkey_local_machine\system\controlset001\services\recovery service for windows

description (value):
Manages background tasks to ensure compatibility with your system configuration and the capability to recover

My Computer

I have an hp pavilion dv5-1002nr notebook pc and have run into the exact same issue. Funny thing is that I have had the notebook pc for less than two days ... I contacted HP support and their support staff thinks I have a virus ... she was nice enough to even point me to the SMINST\%Launcher reference on SpyBot's website.

I have scanned this notebook pc for viruses (AVG-8) and malware (SbyBot-152 and Ad Aware2008) and find nothing ... The digital signatures all look legit too (SoftThinks) ...

I was able to make the problem "go away" by renaming both the BLService.exe and BLauncher.exe files to BLService._exe and BLauncher._exe. I have a second dv5-1002nr still in the box that I'm getting ready to load up this week ... I'm thinking to just copy both files to the other notebook and see if the problem goes away ...

My Computer

HP says Virus?? wow, I swear those files came on the TX2510. After I tracked the registry value down and now know the name of the service 'recovery service for windows' I disabled its loading in selective startup and no longer get the interruptions, however, I did have one pretty hard crash/lockup since doing that. Hoping it was entirely unrelated.

My Computer

If you don't have SameTime installed, then I bet it is a part of the HP recovery service or something or another like that - or part of some program that they install on the computers.

I emailed SoftThiniks last week on this problem and in getting back from vacation this morning I found the following ...

Hello Mike,
I’ve found out that this problem has been reported to us already from HP. These executables are designed to check for Microsoft’s Bitlocker, so if you don’t have Bitlocker installed you shouldn’t see any impact on your system. An web update is being worked on w/ HP, so look for a new web update to be posted in the next month or two on HP’s website for the fix for this.

Sincerely,
SoftThinks Support

... Soooo ... I guess there is a "fix" in the works.

My Computer

We have the same problem on a second new HP Tablet tx2510us. The problem arises after installing printer software (regardless of which printer). I cannot get through to anyone at HP who understands the problem. What is the latest, best temporary solution until HP comes out with a fix?

My Computer

well, that makes sense .. I installed the printer driver for a Cannon Pixma printer and it failed ... then I downloaded a newer driver and it went successfully. The second laptop didn't have the same problems because I only loaded an hp Photosmart D7260 driver.

The only solution I can offer at this time is to rename the two exe's to _exe.

My Computer

my solution for the time being has been to go into msconfig and selective start and disable windows recovery service from starting.
I had one pretty hard crash since then, not sure if related... watching this thread for a more legit solution.

I don't remember if I had installed my HP printer drivers before this started, could have, but can't swear to it.

My Computer

Well, I succeeded to get the issue elevated pretty high up at HP Tech Support (the group in Missouri), but still no solid answer. They cannot seem to determine what it means to the computer system to disable “recover services for windows.” Very disappointed with HP tech support (and the group in India completely wrecked the first computer after taking control).

Here are my conclusions:

1.The best interim solution is Drumtrucker’s – namely, to use msconfig to disable the service called “recovery service for windows.” (Renaming the file might get rid of the error message, but it slows start-up as the system searches for BLService.exe.)

2.The post setting forth the SoftThinks tech support response is interesting, but seems illogical. BLService.exe would not seem to have anything whatsoever to do with Bitlocker given that (a) our problems are occurring on machines (I believe all HP notebooks) running Vista Home Premium, which does not have Bitlocker capability and (b) I happen have a different computer, an HP Pavilion desktop running Vista Ultimate, which DOES have Bitlocker capability, but does NOT have the BLService.exe file and does NOT have a service called “recovery service for windows.” In other words, the file and service at the root of our problem seem to be unrelated to Bitlocker, but are something that HP put on its notebook computers running HP Home Premium (which is why it is so frustrating the HP tech support cannot find out what is going on).

3.This scenario should mean something to someone: The runtime error message (relating to BLService.exe) first arose on our HP notebook PC (tx2510us) after installing the HP Photosmart C4385; the error went away after uninstalling the printer; came back after installing the printer a second time. So we got ride of the HP printer and installed a Canon Pixima M470, and got the error as soon as the printer was installed. One thing in common to both printers (if I remember the HP correctly), is that they both install Nuance’s OmniPage software (as they are both multifunction machines). Does anyone have similar or different experience? Maybe if we can put enough clues on the internet, the HP tech support will eventually figure this out.
