I upgraged my computer from an Athlon 64 5200 (two cores) to a Phenom 9850 (4 cores) on an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe motherbboard. The physical upgrade went smoothly by dealing with Vista 64 is another srory!
I did this upgrade on the version of Vista 64 that I used with my old processor. After the upgrade Vista only recognized two cores. I had to enable HAL on the advanced startup menu for all four cores to be recognized. The change in processors also caused a problem with the Windows Media Player DRM and I had to delete the DRM files to get the media player to work properly. The error message that Microsoft displays was of no help in fixing the problem. Also the upgrade messed up my TV tuner (ATI) drivers. I had to do a repair install of Vista to get it working again. Without google I would not have been able to resolve these problems.
I really did not expect these problems with Vista 64 by just changing the processor. I also which Microsoft could design better error messages that can be actually used!
