Multiple Vista Failures

Greetings:

I am running Vista Home Premium 32 bit without service pack 1 and have been trying to download windows updates for about a month now.

I get a Windows Update error message 8007000b

I ran the command prompt as administrator,typed in fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\.
and I got a message saying

“The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable”

I have tried to download updates 1 at a time, turned off my anti virus And tried manual updates

My Error checking is not working “windows can’t check the disk while it’s in use”
And schedule disk check does not work

The System File Checker tool gives the message
“windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”

The windows memory diagnostic tool runs, reboots and does not display any results

Would appreciate any ideas on how and where to start

Thanks for your response Shawn:

Typing in chkdsk c: /f in command prompt from system recovery options
Gives this response:

The type of the file system is NTFS

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use…
Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first
All opened handles to this volume would then be invalid
Would you like to force dismount on this volume?

I’m not sure I like the sound of that. Although typing in chkdsk c: does start a slow check and shows corrupt areas.

Sorry to tell you but it looks like a bad hard drive.

The only thing left for "you" to do now is to try a clean install of Vista. And if that fails you more then likly have a bad hard drive.

Then you can get a new one from your OEM(if your still under waranty. Or your next option is to get one from www.newegg.com or local at a Best Buy.

You can also download and create a Hirens diagnostic disk. You can find it with a google searh and all the insructions are at the site for creation and use.

A scan with a Hirens disk will find out for sure if your HD is good or not.

    My main rig runs Vista Ultimate or Server 2008. Depending on which Acronis image I decide to load.

I have a second hard drive on my machine . Would I be able to install vista on it and run both so I can transfer files and duplicate my setup (gradually)?
Or will my OEM Vista not allow it and see it as a second computer?

I would run chkdsk c:/r and let it do it on a restart. /r invoke /f and a few other tests.

Chkdsc c: /f worked after a number of tries without requesting a dismount.

Windows update is working and I am up to date except for service pack 1.
