Depends on whether your computer is set to execute program icons with a single-click or double-click. I noticed Sony likes to set up their computers that way for some reason. Under "Folder Options," set it to double-click and that should get rid of it.
Know what you mean Archpope.. Mine is setup for double click but when you hover over an icon on the desktop it will display a boundry box around the icon.

I just looked. I guess it does that for me too. I've had Vista for over a year and never noticed it. There's probably not an easy way to turn it off, then.
Maybe not without turning off the entire section of transparency..

Hi BigTam
I'm not sure if this is what you are asking!
Try clicking on an empty spot on the desktop?
That should at least make the transparency go away.
I don't keep things on my desktop, so I don't
have much experience with it.
I hope this helps!

I am using the classic folder views so this may not pertain to you but going to your folder options then to view, the second to last setting is what turned this on and off for me.
"Use check boxes to select items." I had clicked this on for some reason and the little squares just got on my nerves. I went back to folder options based on the discussion here and found the setting and clicked it off. Now I am back to my regular viewing. Hope this was helpful.
