memory problems with 4 gb ram

Hi guys,

having 2 gb of 1333 mhz DDR3....apparantly not enough if disabling the pagefile. So i bought 2 more sticks some 5 weeks ago, installed it and every 5-10 min i had a "hang-up" and needed to force down and then restart.

Needed to remove the memory and then i saw it. It clearly says on the sticks 'OCZ3G13332GK' (the first G is for Gold), should have been 'OCZ3P13332GK' (the P stands for Platinum). The only difference here is the latency speed. So i returned the memory and yesterday i got the right one.
Surprise .... surprise, 'hang-ups' are back.
So the question : does anyone know if there is a problem with the memory when handling 4 sticks or could it be the Asus board? (P5K64 WS MB S775 Fsb1333 Q P35 4DDRIII13 4xPe16).

I opened the case the first time i had problems put a fan before it, this did not make a difference. Didn't try this now.

thanks

François

PS

t
the 5 weeks because it took a while to get the stuff

I just put in 4Gb a few weeks ago and no hang-ups yet.... are you doing anything in particular when this happens or just booting up?

I don't recommend totally disabling the page file. Some applications look for it, and will throw errors/crash if it's not there/accessable. You're right in thinking it's not necessary with enough RAM, though. So instead of shutting it off completely, resize it to 512MB or maybe a little smaller.

yes guys, but i am working on the machine for some 2 months now with only 2GB and no need for the pagefile, but recently adding programs like Diskeeper, keeping Outlook on all the time, more memory is needed. So if the 2 gb without pagefile work fine, it should work fine with 4gb and still no pagefile. I am afraid that the syncronization of the 4 sticks might give problems??

thanks

4 sticks are harder to drive electrically than just two. Unfortunately, many mobo makers only test/certify two at a time. There's two main things I've seen: One is there may be a little too much voltage drop since the board is having to run twice the modules. The second is it is usual that 4 DIMMS require a 2T command rate, instead of the standard 1T which you would use for a pair.

At this point I would manually set the timings and voltages to the memory maker's spec, and ensure the command rate is set to 2T. Check the manual for your Mobo to see if there's a setting to compensate for voltage drop - Just note that it's there for now. If there isn't a vDrop/vDroop setting, then you can compensate by increasing the voltage to your DIMMS a step, if needed.

There are a few programs to watch your voltages from your desktop - I have/use Everest Ultimate from Lavalys for that, but it'd be overkill if voltage monitoring is all you want to do...
