Long blackouts / screen freezing while starting a game or minimizing it.

Okay, so on almost EVERY game I play, when I start it up, black screen, (Which isnt that much of a problem, i mean starting a game can take a long time.) and I enjoy it. I need to do something, check something, or do anything non game wise, I have to minimize. Well, here is where I get frustrated. I alt+tab, alt+delete, anything, even open up task manager, I get either a black screen, or a frozen screen (depending on the game) for about 30 seconds. Nothing I can do. After it is done piddling me off, my computer goes to desktop, or whatever, and then its fine. I go back to the game? Another freeze. I am running a Vista Home Premium x64 dell computer, with intel quad core, and nVidia Geforce 9800 GTX+ graphics card. (Im not exactly sure on how to fill out specs, so feel free to ask for anything you might need to know) Help would be great, I've been able to deal with this issue for a while but now its just unbearable.

And what video card ? Some games require a minimum video card.

I was once able to play Everquest, 4 years ago, using a 32 megabyte ATI card, but now it takes 128 megs or better video card to play.

Are you running Windows dreamscene as a desktop back ground ?, follow the link below and update your graphics card drivers, (un-install old one before installing new ones), give that a go and post your results. Good luck.

How do I uninstall old ones? Where should I look? (Dont mess with graphics/sound drivers at all really, updated before without deleting old ones.))

You can try to update the drivers without un-installing the old ones and 99 times out of 100 it will work, but as you are having issues it may be better to un-install the old ones first. You will need a couple of bits of software first, both are free, the links are below.

Go to your control panel and un-install your video drivers.

Then go to start, Admin tools, and click on system configuration, go to boot tab and click on safe boot, click apply and reboot.

You are now in safe mode, use the driver sweeper to clean any files left by the un-install.

Use Ccleaner to clean registry, (back up your registry when prompted)

Open system config and uncheck safe boot, click apply and reboot.

Install your new drivers.

OK, lets try somthing different, go to,
start,
administrative tools,
system configuration,
click on startup tab and take a screenshot and post, or list all the items there.

It will look like this.

We need to do this because you now have the latest video drivers, a good CPU, and 4Gig of ram, you should not be getting long delays, if you have a lot of 3rd party programs running in the back ground this will slow the system down, so, lets take a look.

An after thought really, when you finish playing a game and press exit, how long does it take to go back to the desk top ?.

You really need to find what model number your pc is so you can update all your drivers. Look all over the case and if you've still got it the box it came in or the manaul for your pc and see if you can find it. It should be something simple, for example:
