Okay so I have Vista Ultimate 64 and my xbox 360 controller. everything says it should load right up as soon as i plug it in, but it's not and i'm starting to get frustrated with it. I've downloaded and installed (running as admin) the xbox controller software and still the guide light is just flashing, my system does not recognize the device but it chimes when i unplug it and plug it back in. in the device manager it's showing up, but in control panel it does not. can anyone help me please!?!

I also have Ultimate x64 (SP1 + latest updates) and bought a second-hand wired 360 controller (sold my 360 months ago!). All I had to do was plug it into a USB slot and it just started working. I didn't have to download any software for it. I'm pretty sure Vista did that automatically (icon on the taskbar/systray telling me hardware installing), I think Vista may have downloaded additional drivers for it but I didn't have to do anything manually.
All I can tell you is that SP1 was installed prior to plugging the controller in and I was connected to the Net, it popped up on the taskbar/systray almost immediately saying it was installing...
Hope you sort it. It's the perfect gamepad for the PC. Using it on GRID at the moment...
I also have Vista 64bit and I got a Wired Xbox 260 controller for PC from Circuit City and I just did a plug and play.. I did not need any software for that thing at all. So not sure why your having that problem. are you sure it's a 360 controller. cuz regular xbox controllers are another story. but 360 ones should work Instantly.. Vista has Pre-installed drivers for them.
