Bluetooth dongle not recognised - maybe driver problem?

I have an IVT bluenext BN01 micro bluetooth adaptor; I bought it in on amazon.co.uk 28 Oct 2010. It came with a mini-cd with bluesoleil software. I used it successfully for a while, but I haven't used it for a few months. It still works in my old XP computer, but I can't now get it to work on my vista laptop. It did work on this laptop before. A message on screen on the bluesoleil window says please insert a Bluetooth device. I have turned computer off & on again, taken adaptor out & put in again. Somehow windows is not recognising it. I presume it may be a driver problem but I may be wrong.
My Dell Vostro 1710 Vista laptop has automatic updates. Blue soleil is version 2.7.0.35. I uninstalled & then reinstalled this from the CD that came with the adaptor. The adaptor has no buttons on it, it's very small; the whole thing is less than twice the size of the USB plug itself.
Could I have removed the driver for it? I don't recall doing so. In Control Panel, Bluetooth Devices has nothing listed. If I click "Allow bluetooth devices to find this computer" then an error message says "An error occurred while windows was saving your settings. A Bluetooth device might be unplugged"
I've tried lots of things but it still doesn't work. Now a message says

BlueSoleil Bttray has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.(only one option - Close program)
and then
The procedure entry point FinishParse could not be located in the dynamic link library versit.dll

I've tried uninstalling other devices in device manager (some had exclamation marks, & wouldn't update the drivers when I tried) & deleting some bluetooth entries in registry (after backing it up).
I used USBDeview & uninstalled lots of unused USB devices listed there.

As far as I know my laptop doesn't have any integral bluetooth, so that's why I bought the dongle. And it worked.

Any other suggestions welcome!

Hi Ricardo, Welcome to Vista Forums. I will try to help you fix your problem with your Bluetooth adapter. Here are some things to try:

1) Check for the device in Device Manager: Click Start, type Device into the search box, click Device Manager in the list of results, Click the plus next to Bluetooth Radios (If present) and see if the dongle shows up without a Yellow Warning sign next to it. If it doesn't show up, or has a warning sign next to it, let me know. If it does read on.

2) Reinstall the Device Driver and Software: Go to Control Panel, Programs, Programs and Features, select the Bluetooth software from the list and uninstall it. Then insert the disc that came with your dongle and reinstall the software and drivers. If this works, Please tell me, otherwise read on.

3) If your are here and the problem is still not solved, let me know. I am searching for a driver on the internet that will download and saves normally, and that is virus free. I will let you know if I find one.

1) In Control panel there is a section Bluetooth Devices. But nothing is listed in that.
In Device manager there are no bluetooth devices listed at the moment. Previously there were some in Other Devices, with exclamation marks, but I uninstalled them.
Under Ports (COM & LPT) there are 9 items listed as Bluetooth Serial port, followed by a number - 10,11,3,4,5,6,7,8,9
They all seem to be the same. In Properties it says this device is working properly. It gives manufacturer as IVT Corporation. Driver version 6.0.12.56 Digital signer is microsoft windows hardware compatibility publisher
Driver is serenum.sys, in Windows\system32\DRIVERS\
Provider Microsoft
File version 6.0.6000 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)
also another driver is listed: Vcomm.sys, also in Windows\system32\DRIVERS\
Provider IVT Corporation
File version 6.0.12.56

2) I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it a few times but will try again later.

1) Completely reinstall the Bluetooth adapter and its components: Open Device Manager ([FONT=Verdana, Tahoma, Calibri, Geneva, sans-serif]Click Start, type Device into the search box, click Device Manager in the list of results) and uninstall all the Bluetooth Devices, Serial Ports, and other devices with the driver from IVT Corporation. Next unplug the Bluetooth dongle from the computer. Reboot. Reinstall the drivers. If it asks for the adapter to be plugged in, plug it in. If this works let me know. If not, continue reading.

2) Manually reinstall the Bluetooth adapter and its components: [/FONT]Open Device Manager ([FONT=Verdana, Tahoma, Calibri, Geneva, sans-serif]Click Start, type Device into the search box, click Device Manager in the list of results) and uninstall all the Bluetooth Devices, Serial Ports, and other devices with the driver from IVT Corporation. Reboot Once again, open Device Manager [/FONT]([FONT=Verdana, Tahoma, Calibri, Geneva, sans-serif]Click Start, type Device into the search box, click Device Manager in the list of results) and find the devices. they should be listed under Other Devices, as their name, or as Unidentified Device, or Unknown Device. Insert the driver CD, but DO NOT run the setup file. (Close Auto Run if if opens) Right click each device, select Update Driver Software, and then click Browse my computer for driver software. Click Browse. Expand Computer and select the CD/DVD Drive. Click OK. Make sure Include Sub-folders is checked, then click next. Windows will search for the Driver on the CD/DVD and install it. If this works, let me know! If not, we will dig deeper.

When I uninstall the Bluetooth Serial Ports, I also have the option to "Delete the driver software for this device". I wonder should I check this option. What do you think?

Also, last time I switched off & then on, with the dongle in, there was no message saying new hardware found. I don't know why; it used to come up when the dongle was in, & would ask me to find the driver for it. Now it doesn't.

This is odd. After following your suggestion, now in Device Manager in View I ticked Show Hidden devices; then under Bluetooth Device there are 3 things listed (I'm sure they weren't there before) (also, when "Show Hidden devices" is unticked the Bluetooth Device doesn't show).
Bluetooth HID Enum Device (Hardware ID: VBTBUSENUM) (vbtenum.sys)
Bluetooth HID Manager (Hardware ID: BTHidMgr) (BTHidMgr.sys)
Bluetooth VComm Manager (Hardware ID: IVTMgr) (VCommMgr.sys)
Hardware IDs all have a long hexadecimal number first
All 3 say Bluetooth Device, manufacturer IVT Corporation, this device is working properly; location unknown
After the Hardware IDs, I've written the name of the 3 driver files, all located in windows\system32\drivers


There is no heading in Device Manager for Other Devices, nor for Ports (LPT & COM)


I'll probably try the whole thing again tomorrow & make double sure that I follow your directions to the letter!

Oh yes, also, when I put the dongle back in, a box said windows was trying to locate the driver for my new hardware, but it gave up. I used the files from the CD again (but I don't use the CD; I have them all saved in a folder on my hard drive, just in case!)

Did you use Device Manager to install the software? Or the setup file on the disc.

Make sure that no setup file was open, and that Autorun was closed when Device Manager searches, and installs the appropriate driver.

I've been otherwise occupied this week.

I've tried a few things. Today when I go to programmes - IVT BlueSoleil - Uninstall BlueSoleil , once it gets started a menu comes up saying: The following applications should be closed before continuing the installation:
BlueSoleil Hid Service
Start BT in service.

I don't know how to close them, or why they are opened. Should i use task manager?

The bullet point ticked is
Automatically close applications and attempt to restart them after setup is complete.

To install he software I used the files I have copied off the CD onto my hard drive. I did this in case the CD got corrupted.
I've clicked that, to continue the uninstall process. Mind you I've done this before. I also uninstalled (again) the Bluetooth devices in Device Manager

If that doesn't work, lets repair the Windows Files. Go to start->type cmd->right click CMD in the results, and select Run as Administrator. At the prompt type: sfc /scannow This might take a while. When it is done, reboot. Try this again:

I did a search for all files that include the 2 letters bt together. There are several files with bt included in their name in C:\Windows\System32

with names such as

with some of these above-mentioned files apparently duplicated but with very slightly


different names, i.e. different hexadecimal letters after the inf_

I couldn't get this to work. I tried start - run - type cmd but that wouldn't give me administrator privs. So I tried windows Help & it told me how to do it:

• Point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then right-click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator.
  
  I'm sure you know this & you just forgot, or typed it wrong, but I'm writing this out in case anyone else is following.
  
  Anyway it's now scanning, now doing a verification phase of system scan ...

I would definitely not recommend deleting any files at all unless it is the following:

Go to RUN (Windows Key + R) and type %temp%
Clear all the files. If there are some that it says are in use, just click skip.

You shouldn't delete any of the other ones.

Did you use sfc /scannow?

Also on my Vista PC if I right click CMD in the results, there is an option for run as Administrator. Strange. Do you have SP2? Did you install Take Ownership option? If any of those are yes, then that is why.

yes I have SP2. But my start menu is classic windows. Could that make a difference?

The scannow gave this result: (I can't work out how to copy & paste it so I just have to write it out!

Verification 100% complete
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

That is why. I meant the native search box in the "new" start menu.

There are problems with the filesystem. This means that the issue is not the driver, but your installation of Windows. I will reply shortly with a possible fix.
