Solved Vista Driver Issue (concerning i.e. iPod)

Hello.

I have tried numerous solutions I have encountered online, both concerning Vista + drivers and concerning drivers specifically for my iPod.
My goal is to find a way to be able to connect my iPod to my computer and I suspect this is a general Vista driver issue problem and so I am posting this here.

The problem: When I connect my iPod via USB my computer tries to locate and install driver software, fails to do so. Then it prompts me to search for a solution online (no luck) or browse my computer. I have installed the latest version of iTunes (which is supposed to include a driver) but even though I tell it to search in all of C:\ (including subfolders) it does not find the driver.
I checked Device Manager, and my computer doesn't even realize it's a USB device... my iPod is under: Other Devices. And it has a yellow exclamation mark triangle.

Hello, look in your control panel, see the Sync icon. open that up and set up Sync between computer and Ipod, this may very well be your issue. Post back results please.

Thanks for the advice. I opened "Sync Center" (*PATH: Control Panel\Sync Center\Sync Setup*) with a green sync icon, and tried to set up a sync partnership, but the iPod isn't listed there. Most likely because of, and I quote the description of a sync partnership, "If the item you want to sync with is not listed here, your computer might not be able to detect it".
The only thing listed is the Offline Files folder.

Turn on the device and plug it into your computer. If it is a wireless device, make sure that a wireless connection is established between the device and your computer or connect it by using a universal serial bus (USB) cable.

Click to open Sync Center.

In the left pane of Sync Center, click Set up new sync partnerships.

Click the name of the device in the list of available sync partnerships.

On the toolbar, click Set Up.

Select the settings and schedule to determine how and when you want to sync your device with your computer.

To start syncing immediately, click View sync partnerships, click your device in the list of sync partnerships, and then, on the toolbar, click Sync.

Did you do this that i listed above ?

I did everything up to "Click the name of the device in the list of available sync partnerships."
Since that was impossible due to the fact that my iPod isn't listed as a device there.

When you plug in to computer via USB port , does it show the icon for hardware detected and show it installing the driver ? If not, try another usb port , then post back if you got it to install driver so it will be able to sync.

Yes, it does show the icon for hardware detected! And it is unable to install a driver, I've tried all three USB ports.
P.S. I also checked the cable I'm using, and that works perfectly on another computer, no problem.

Okay, sheesh, sorry, you said this in the first post. In my haste of trouble shooting, and verifying what you are seeing i missed re reading to confirm. In device manager, verify when you right click it where it shows it, that you are still unable to install driver, note : when telling it to browse your computer , your driver files should be highlighted and the specific driver for the I Pod should be clicked okay, and it dang well should install it. If it does not do this on a retry that i am going to ask you to do now, post back please results.

Thank you for your help! But oh my god.
Can't believe "I"(since it wasn't exactly me) figured this out, I looked at another thread, this was the solution that worked for me:

"it would appear that VISTA is rather stupid when it comes to the ipod - it can't find the driver for itself. Do the normal autmatic way of trying to find the driver then look in the hardware device list (control panel) you should see you ipod listed under other devices with a yellow triangle next to it. right click this line and select properties. then click update device driver. then DON't do the automatic find, instead click i will choose the device from a list. Click on "storage device" and voila! VISTA now finds a USB mass storage device and install it - JOB DONE! HOORAY!"

A note: I didn't find an option "storage device" but instead chose Universal Serial Bus Controller.
Then all of a sudden Vista displays Apple Mobile USB Driver and I click "next".
And bam, now my computer recognizes the iPod.

Another note: looking at the properties of the driver, I can see it is located at:

"C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\usbaapl.sys" and
"C:\Windows\System32\usbaaplrc.dll" ,
respectively.

Wow. excellent. had to be something close, cause , it made no sense as to why it would not load driver, following instructions from it's own help sites , which is what i have been doing to assist you. Well. Great. Mark this as solved then , so others do not click on it to assist. but, can see the solution.
Come back anytime, although , i did not get the final solution, we do have good stuff here, for example some fine tutorials by Brink . Good reading. Thanks for coming here.
