Unable to install device driver software; code 39--please help!

My CD/DVD Driver doesn't work--insert a disc in to my laptop and I hear a brief whirring sound, then nothing. Tried the following - please see error message below. I'm a newbie at this so please be very detailed and specific if suggesting a fix, thanks so much in advance for your help!

I have a Sony VGN-FZ140E; OS = Vista Home Premium + Browser = Google Chrome. Hope the details below help?

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Check for solutions: Could not load driver software.

Description:
Windows was able to successfully install device driver software, but the driver software encountered a problem when it tried to run. The problem code is 39.

Go to search type device manager.
In manager look for CD/DVD drives
In CD drives look for yellow warning markers, if found the driver is corruprt, replace. If no yellow marker, the driver is probably not the most up to date, upade.

Thanks Richard - next to SONY DVD RW AW-G540A ATA DEVICE in Device Manager there's a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside; I assume that's what you mean by a warning marker? If so--the driver is corrupt, but I don't know how to replace it?? Can you please help me with that? Thanks.

I'm not experienced enough at this to know what to do beyond this point...still stuck and DVD-less!!
