OS will not recognise any CD-ROMS

As the subject sugests I can not get the os (Vista 32bit) to recognise my cd-rom drive, there is nothing present in 'my computer' and the drive is flagged in device manager as having a driver missing, I know this is most likely the problem but whatever I install nothing works, and as its a plug and play drive it should work without any additional drivers etc.

I had an LG external cd-rom drive which i also connected via USB but it wont recognise this also.

Anyone got any ideas?
