Please help! can only start in safe mode: "Consumer IR Devices" not working "code31"

Yesterday my PC crashed and now I can only use it in Safe Mode. I have tried the self repair thing which has done nothing. The first time it happened, it allowed me to start from a system restore point, but then it crashed again and now doing a system restore doesn't even let me start up windows normally.

I looked in the "device manager" driver section and it has an exclamation mark next to the "Consumer IR Devices" in the "System Devices" section and It says: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"

I click on "check for solutions" it doesn't do anything, and I have tried uninstalling and restarting the computer, and also the "update driver" option but it says windows has determined it is up to date.

Does anyone have any solutions, this is soooooo frustrating!!!

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Please help! can only start in safe mode: "Consumer IR Devices" not working "code

Welcome
Lets try to diagnose, go in with safe mode and set up clean boot. Does that worK
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
If yes follow instructions to find the problem
If no
Go in via safe mode find out the necessary information about the driver then go to the website to download to desktop. Then install.
Follow this tut to up date the driver
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/193584-device-manager-install-driver.html
If it cannot be updated in this way, follow to step 7 and go to website and explained above.

If you unistall the driver, you can use automatic update.

I am not sure if that is your problem, however.
You may want to go in via, safe mode and set up a new account.
Download Security Essentials
and Malwarebytes and check for virus and malware. Do the full scan and update first.
If the new account does indeed work for you.

Re: Please help! can only start in safe mode: "Consumer IR Devices" not working "code

Have scanned system with malware bytes in safe mode and nothing. Because I'm in safe mode there is only so many functions that I can perform and I have not come any closer to fixing this.

I have spent a few hours on google looking this up and people have suggested in other cases with this "consumer IR device not working" and "Code 31" that it could potentially be to do with either RAM or video card/driver problems.

Can anyone shed any light on this as to what the problem may be?

Oh and here are my system details:

Windows Vista, Home Premium

Philips Freevents, (desktop PC)
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 2.40 GHz
2 GB RAM
32 Bit

NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT

If its a ram problem, this test will let you know
Run for 7 or 8 passes.
If no errors are found take a good stick and test each slot for 3 passes
If errors are found do the same for 6 passes
Download memtest86 and test RAM
www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

If it is a driver problem, make sure that you have the most current updated driver.
Check in device manager
How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- The most common drivers are listed on this page: http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org/drvrdown.html

Re: Please help! can only start in safe mode: "Consumer IR Devices" not working "code

Thanks for the reply Rich.

I'm not really to savy when it comes to this advanced side of computing so I will write down all the information about this driver which seems to have the problem

The "Consumer IR Devices" which has the yellow exclamation mark next to it has the following details:

"Driver Provider: Microsoft"
"Driver Version: 6.0.6001.18000"
"Driver Files: c:\windows\system32\DRIVERS\circlass.sys"
"File Version: 6.0.6001.18000(longhorn_rtm.080118-1840)"
"Driver Date: 21/6/2006"
"Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows"

Do you know where and how I would go about downloading and manually updating this driver?

Re: Please help! can only start in safe mode: "Consumer IR Devices" not working "code

Although most of this is covered by the recommendations provided above (and they include options not even discussed in this article but are certainly worth checking), there are a couple of additional options that may help if the others don't work in the following article: Code 31 Error - This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device - Error Code 31.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Re: Please help! can only start in safe mode: "Consumer IR Devices" not working "code

I'm in the process of trying to find the said Driver to download from the internet but am at a bit of a loss - I'm not too familiar with where to look for it.
I've tried Microsoft's download website but i couldn't find anything - (and couldn't quite understand what file name to type in!)

Can someone help me locate a site where I can download this from?

Here are the full details:
"Driver Provider: Microsoft"
"Driver Version: 6.0.6001.18000"
"Driver Files: c:\windows\system32\DRIVERS\circlass.sys"

Re: Please help! can only start in safe mode: "Consumer IR Devices" not working "code

I have found that a lot of these said driver issues can be down to the registry.I worked on a system just the other day with the same issue.
Opening "RUN" program and typing in the Box prefetch, when folder opens all can be deleted. As well as "RUN" %temp% all can be deleted w/ exceptions to running processes.

As well you can clean the registry out and all temp files w/ this free program "Ccleaner"

CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Read the instructions and choose to back up registry when prompted to.
After doing these steps reboot to normal windows. there you should beable to update drivers.

Re: Please help! can only start in safe mode: "Consumer IR Devices" not working "code

Hi, Thanks for the response, this is the 1st time that I have ever used one of these forums so cheers. Will try that out but would it be possible to dumb down things for us, and maybe give us a step by step a bit :)

Also, would this be something that I will be able to undo, as I am sure that I will inevitably get it wrong the 1st time. (I'm an art student...trust me ...none of us know the 1st thing about computers) :)
