Laptop CD-ROM Drive - Device Drivers Marked as Corrupt.

I was in Device Manager regarding another issue I'm having with my Laptop, and I noticed the warning mark at !Slimtype DVDRW SSM-8515s ATA Drive.

To establish the cause of the problem, I ran System Health Report, which came back with the following disturbing information;



Back at Device Manager, at Properties - I collected the following information on the problem;



Which also advises that Windows cannot load the Driver here;



Needless to say, but I did try to update the driver from within Windows, and typically the system reports back that the Driver is the best on offer - corrupted but OK? Rubbish. The same happened when I did a check for Solutions....of course there isn't a solution to this, other than following an uninstall of the corrupted, and reinstall of new, clean Drivers.

I've had a look around on the Web and found an outfit called 'Driver Updater' here , but I'm a bit wary about some of their claims.

In essence, I'm uncertain about how I would best carry out a repair or replacement of the corrupt Driver. Is there a process I need to follow to carry out an uninstall of the corrupt Driver, and then follow up that with the fresh installation of a new Driver package??

And how do I go about determining the best source to provide me with the right Driver package, to exactly mirror the previously uncorrupted version?

I think that Windows possible does have a driver, but not later than the current version. Make a System Restore point, and then uninstall the corrupted driver using Device Manager. Properties > Driver tab > Uninstall.

Now run a new search through device manager, and this time I imagine that a new driver will appear.

I would not trust that website. I recently decided to try out one of the free ones (ie freeware, not trialware) and one that seemed not very pushy. Here are my results (quoted from what I wrote to another member)

A couple of days ago, I saw you asked about one of these driver updater things. I knew of one freeware one, not trialware, and decided to give it a go. I ran it, and it picked up four things needed to be updated. They seemed correct, and the user interface was so nice that it inspired confidence. However, I decided not to update my SATA RAID controller with it, I was not that confident! Three updates to download. My network card driver came to a compresses 170mb. WHAT! That is bigger than my graphics card driver, with all of the AVIO bits and everything. Cancel! The next was 5 mb. Setup epically failed, several times. Give up! Next was sound card. Setup succeeded, but for some reason, I no longer have any sound, and no driver at all! Emergency Dell website visit! Quite glad I did not try the SATA RAID controller! I honestly have no idea what would have happened! I think I would have been fine, as I actually put a SATA III card in, so I think that I actually have two SATA RAID controllers, but even so!

However, the above is not ideal. What if Windows still does not find a driver. Therefore, I think I actually have a better solution. Please try the BELOW, and if by the end of it, there is still an issue, do the ABOVE!

This may be slightly safer, but I still feel that the above is the best. However, the below should be performed before the above no matter what.

If this is a Windows Standard driver, a clean copy may be stored in the WinSxS, or a different cache.

Right, please run steps 1, 2A, 3 (about 15 minutes), 4, 5, and then Step 1 from the top yellow box, but only follow this last one if Integrity Violations were found. Please upload the new sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop. System Files - SFC Command

If Integrity Violations are not found, then there is no harm in running the above. If they are found, then there may or may not be a better solution than the above. You should run SFC first.

Most ideally, get a driver from your computer manufacturer.

So, please do the following using the (far more than I meant to) disjointed post:

Run SFC.
Uninstall the driver.

OR

Get a proper driver from the manufacturer.

SFC MUST be run first, because once the driver has been uninstalled, the SFC evidence is gone.

I hope you're not holding your breath on this one. I will get back to post full details in due course, but in the meantime, I now have the Driver in full restored to my system, and I couldn't believe how simple it was - once I 'discovered' the right place to go fetch it!!.....and it certainly was NOT from Acer, my Laptop Manufacturer, and therein lies a big "!warning!" Suffice to say that I've lost ALL CONFIDENCE in them!

Microsoft Fix it Solution Center

.....er...have a look at the very first topic listed!!!

This has to be the most underpublicised resource in Microsoft...,
but there are some pitfalls I found in looking elsewhere and it's those that I want to document fully in my next post, when I do it.

That is an odd little solution. That one deletes either the Upper Filters or Lower Filters. It is actually quite common, and is a registry fix. I shall associate them with this error message for ever more. It is usually for CD drives that are fine in Device Manager, but don't show in My Computer. Anyway, well done, and thanks!
