Need Help:Boot Critical File C

My internet stopped working tonight, so I restarted it. When it restart it went directly to Startup Repair, it wasn't able to automatically fix anything. I've tried restarting it and even removed the hardrive and it does the same thing. I can't get past the startup repair screen. It is more or less shutdown and restart, contact the administrator or your computer provider. The "root cause" seems to be the following:

Boot critical file C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\uolbyzn.sys is corrupt

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am running on Vista Home Basic

Hello,

This is very strange. Normally from this position we would insert the Windows CD, boot to the Recovery Console and we would send you a list of commands to copy back the file from your Vista DVD. However, I do not have this file on my working Vista Home Premium, and searching Google comes up with not a single hit. It is a bit strange for a virus, but I suppose it could be. It is not any normal System file, or any normal file of any program. It is not even showing up in manual virus removal websites. Also, have you tried Safe Mode and Last Known Good Configuration?

Richard

Thanks for checking it out. So this morning I turn it on and it says it cannot determine the problem. However at the end of the diagnosis it gives me the same error from last not.

I am not able to get to any option to even try Safe Mode. I turn it on and it goes directly to Startup Repair. It then says Windows cannot repair this computer automatically. I can either shut down or view advanced options for system recovery and support.

In advanced options I can, "startup repair, system restore, windows complete pc restore, windows memory diagnostic tool, command prompt, and dell factory image restore." I clicked on system restore and I can restore it hopefully from 4.23.10. Would this be the same as Last Good Config?

Thanks again.

My Computer

Tried Last known good config, no luck...cannot determine cause of problem.

So I tried System Restore and I recieved the following message:

System restore failed due to an unspecified error
Cannot create a file when that file already exists.(0x80070B7)

When I go the two restore points the description says"install:Windows Update" is it possible that updates are causing this problem? There have been a few times when windows updates my computer doesn't boot up properly.

Help Please.

Thanks again for your help. So I tried Method 2 and here's what happened.

I ran the Command Prompt: Bootrec /RebuildBcd. I hit Enter and recieved the following message:

Successfully scanned Windows installations, Total identified Windows installations:0, Operation completed successfully

There was no installation path to add the entry to the BCD store. No where to type "Yes."

I then tried the second option:

Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup - "Operation completed successfully"

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old - "The system cannot find the file specified."

Bootrec /rebuildbcd - "Operation completed successfully"

Restarted both times, same problem. Should I have tried something different? Again, really appreciate your help. Any more ideas?

I don't know what that driver is, you may be better getting rid of it.

Are you sure you spelt it right uolbyzn.sys ?

Boot this FREE Paragon Rescue Kit Express and select NormalMode>File Transfer Wizard.

Find the driver in system32 and rename it.

See if that helps.

You suggest I get rid of the driver?

So I find the driver that is causing the problem and rename it? Should I delete it or just rename it? What do I do once I rename it?

Sorry for all the questions, I've never done this before. Just want to be sure I do it properly.

Thanks for the help.

My Computer

Just rename it to uolbyzn.sysOLD

Se if you can boot up then .

If not, use File Transfer to get your vital data off - you may have an infection.

You could try running a bootable a/v - or if you get your data off - just clean reinstall.

How do I boot the CD when my computer goes right into Start up repair?

Where do I select NormalMode>File Transfer Wizard?

Any recommendations on bootable a/v?

Also, now after running Startup Repair, it isn't sure what the problem is.

Thanks.

Put the cd in the drive restart the pc.

If cdrom is already first in HD boot order - you will see "press any to boot from cdromdrive", obviously, just press any key.

Otherwise, watch the white writing on black screen as you start pc - it might say

F11 ( OR SOME OTHER KEY )for boot menu

F2 (OR DEL OR SOME OTHER KEY ) for setup.

Press whatever it says for boot menu - arrow down to cdrom drive, put cd in drive, close it, press Enter.

If you don't get the F11 (OR WHATEVER KEY ) for boot menu, then you have to press whatever key it says for setup.

In there you will find a heading "boot order" or similar.

Set cdromdrive as first, then Save and Exit ( there will be F10 or similar to Save and Exit - it will tell you ).
