Saying C Drive corrupt ...

I turn on my computer and it tells me that my c drive is corrupt and to run chkdsk.

I go into command prompt (right clicking on it to run it as an admin) and run the command sfc /scannow.

It says that it's starting the system scan and that it will take some time, but as it's getting it's "Verification" it stops at 9 percent complete and says that "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

I've also tried going in through computer>right click>properties>tools>error-checking>check now and then clicking both check-boxes >start>schedule disk check and then I've tried restarting, but nothing happens.

WHAT IS GOING ON AND HOW CAN I FIX IT?! :confused:

(i'll warn you, i'm not the greatest tech person, so i'd really appreciate it if any help could be put in really simple terms ...)

login as the administrator. Do error checking from it. both check boxes. If you can backup data to another drive, do it. I would say your hard drive could be failing.

i had that problem with a computer belonging to my friend who brought it to me to look at. found out it was one of the memory modules.

i'd download memtest86+ , burn the .iso to disc, boot from disc and see if one or more of your memory modules are defective.

Effects of a faulty RAM chips on storage and data recovery

Bad Random Access Memory (RAM) chips will cause data loss, and recovery attempts require them to be replaced.
Faulty DIMMs will usually manifest themselves in spontaneous reboots, blue screens or program failures. Things of all sorts can happen when data that is read from memory differs from what was written to that memory. An implication is that some wrong data from memory will eventually end up being written to the hard disk.
A faulty memory page in a disk write cache will result in wrong data written to the drive. On top of that, the operating system will usually be unaware of data corruption. A "write miss" situation is also a possible scenario, albeit rare. A RAM malfunction can cause correct data to be written to an incorrect location on the disk, thus overwriting some other piece of data.
Soon after a memory chip goes bad, the logical structure of a hard drive starts to degrade, ending up in an unbootable system or an unmountable volume. The extent of damage varies, but most files are usually recoverable.
The key point here is: a bad memory chip must be replaced before attempting any repair. This is because:

Attempting to repair the disk in-place (using CHKDSK or Norton Disk Doctor) can cause additional damage. Attempting a read-only data recovery with ZAR tools is unlikely to damage the drive further, but may damage the target (good) drive during file copying.
Recovery can be safely carried out if you attach the damaged drive to another computer, but you must replace the broken memory before you bring the data back, otherwise you risk losing your data again.

Several memory testing tools are available, examples being GoldMemory and DocMem. They can reliably detect memory failures and we suggest using them when in doubt.

Does sound like a problem with the hard drive. Download a hard drive utility to check the SMART status of the drive. Backup your data, too.

Run chkdsk /r in command prompt. This tool can usually resolve most file system errors.

just my two cents, but i'd check the memory first. your hdd may very well be going bad, but it would not hurt to check the memory too. taken from my previous post:

when i had my friends computer for repair, i found an article that i'd wish that i'd saved, but the gist of it is this: before information is written to the hdd, it is stored in memory/ram. if the ram is defective, the information stored in the memory could be corrupted, and if it is corrupted, then it would be written to the hdd corrupted. the symtoms i had with my friends computer were the similar to what you are stating. when i'd boot, if i didn't get the message that chkdsk need to run, then when windows would (try) to start, it would stop and reboot before ever fully loading. in the rare instance i would get windows to boot, i would immediately be bombarded by system error messages stating that the operating system is corrupt. when i found the information about the effects of faulty ram, i checked the computer with memtest86+ and immediately found fault ram. this was a two module, ddr system, so i removed one stick and ran memtest and repeated with the other stick. i found one bad stick and booted with no problem with the good stick. i did a restore and all was well.

it might sound crazy to check the memory when you are getting hdd error messages, but i wouldn't have taken my time to respond if i had not seen this first hand, no longer than a month ago .

Why bad RAM matters

RAM errors can not only corrupt what is written to disk, but also where it is written to disk, at a level beneath that of the file system. A sector intended to be written to the contents of a file may instead be written over some core file system structure, e.g. if a hi-order bit in the raw sector address is flipped from 1 to 0.

RAM errors can corrupt code, causing crashes, but a greater risk may arise where the code does not crash. Many disk operation calls may use a status byte in a register to differentiate between read and write operations, so a bit-flip there could cause a write instead of a read. This is why no disk access can be considered safe; any disk access starts with reading crucial areas of the file system, and if those reads become writes, the disk contents could be trashed.

I downloaded the program and burned it to a disc, but when I tried to run the actual program itself, it wouldn't work. It said I didn't have the right program to open it. What am I doing wrong?

you have to use a program like nero that can burn iso's to disc so that you can boot from the disc. it seems that what you may have done is to just burn it to the disc as a file.

or, you could use iso recorder, which is free and is available in 32 or 64 bit flavors.

when you use the program, you will be booting your computer from that disc, not using the program from within windows.

I downloaded the program and burned it to a disc, but when I tried to run the actual program itself, it wouldn't work. It said I didn't have the right program to open it. What am I doing wrong?

You dont need this program
Click on the Start orb, type Mem into the Start Search, Click on Memory Diagnostics Tool accept the UAC, Click on Restart now and check for problems.

More important right click on C:\ click on Properties, Click on Tools, Click on Check now accept the UAC Make sure both boxes are ticked, Click on Start, restart if asked and wait for it to finish (this could take a while)

Hi im just coming across this. I am having the same issue I downloaded the software and now I dont know how to get it to boot it from the computer. Please help

Hello and welcome.

When you say the commputer tells you to do a CHKDSK and then your next statement was you tried the sfc. Please try this:

1. Lets do the CHKDSK first heres how.

I also would do a full AV scan...

Download and run a full scan from malwarebytes...

When you first start your computer and before Windows starts to load press F8 and then go to Boot using your arrow keys (mouse won't work as no driver has been loaded yet) Put the CD/DVDROM to the top of the boot order and restart your computer.
