A problem occured where suddenly, a BLACK SCREEN appeared on my monitor.
Rebooted, but went back to the BLACK SCREEN -- with a blinking dash up in the left-hand corner of the screen.
Several more reboots -- same thing.
At one point, while rebooting, was able to interrupt by getting into the BIO screen. That didn't help -- didn't know where to go from there (too technical) -- didn't understand any of the selections.
After going around in circles for half an hour or so -- reading into different forums -- looking & fiddling with the cable connections, I finally found the solution by accident .
Extremely, embarrassingly easy ! A real simple fix.
. . . I had forgotten to remove a Store-n-Go flash unit from my USB port after using it for several minutes, uploading many pictures.
This was the culprit !
After disengaging it from the USB port, rebooting was successful -- no more problem.
