Hello,

I have a laptop that is constantly BSOD- Whether it be normal, safe mode or any other 'mode'.

For this reason, i was unable to run the diagnostic tool. However, what i did was pulled the HDD out salved it and copied the .dmp files from the mini-dump folder and zipped them.

I'm not sure if your tool gathers 'extra' info but as i said, impossible to run as can't get into the O/S.

The BSOD's started to happen after we installed McAfee and using an external Hard Drive.

I narrowed it down to three possible suspects:

ntkrnlmp.exe - (Not sure if this reefers to a driver?)
mfewfpk.sys - Mcafee
snp2uvc.sys - Suyin USB 2.0 Webcam driver

Now, I can not disable the drivers/Rename or remove as i can't get into the O/S. Nor can i removed the Mcafee or Webcam Driver.

So i'm at a dead end. Any help would be really appreciated.

Ideally, i'd like to sort this problem without formatting and re-installing the O/S - (Worst case, if i have too- Will this happen again due to it being a 'power failure' BSOD?) Or is it just software orientated.

I reviewed your files and it agrees with your analysis. The problem appears to be your Anti Virus or your Webacam. The third driver is a Microsoft Head Driver, which just takes the blame for the true problem.
The advice that we give to members is to update the drivers. In your case, with system restore go back before McAfee and see what happens. Replace your AV with Microsoft Security Essentials, at least for a test.

Oh, sorry- I forgot to include this in my original post!

I tried system restore to multiple restore points before this issue started.

However, every one i tried: "Failed with a Catastrophic failure"- Then forces me to restart.

Give this a try:
If you create a recovery DVD, you may be able to boot to recovery options
 Create Recovery DVD.
Hard Disc Controller must be set to IDE in BIOS and Bios must be set to boot from the CD Boot Priority - Change

The Vista recovery disk is used to boot Vista when it won't boot - to run Startup Repair, System Restore, access a Command Line, Recover using a Vista Backup Image, etc.
System Recovery Options. Choose an option tht will not cause you to lose your stuff.

If Vista will not start now, boot the Recovery CD to run Startup Repair which automates System Restore as well as numerous other tests including System File Checker which can repair system files which are not corrupted beyond repair.

If Vista still will not start, try booting into Safe Mode to run sfc /scannow to repair System files.

  • Startup Repair. Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain problems, such as missing or damaged system files, that might prevent Windows from starting. Startup Repair is located on the System Recovery Options menu, which is on the Windows Vista installation disc. If your computer has preinstalled recovery options, it might also be stored on your computer's hard disk. For more information, see Startup Repair: frequently asked questions and What are the system recovery options in Windows Vista? If your computer does not include Startup Repair, your computer manufacturer might have customized or replaced the tool. Check the information that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer's website.
  • Change restart settings in safe mode. If your computer is stuck in a loop where Windows fails, attempts to restart, and then fails again repeatedly, restart your computer in safe mode and select the Disable automatic restart on system failure checkbox. For more information, see Advanced startup options (including safe mode).
  • Reinstall. If no other options have solved the problem, and you are sure that your computer's hardware is functioning normally, you might need to reinstall Windows. A custom (clean) installation of Windows will permanently delete all of the files on your computer and reinstall Windows, so only use this option if all other recovery options have been unsuccessful. After the installation, you will need to reinstall your programs and restore your files from backup copies. For more information, see Installing and reinstalling Windows**.

I ran the start up repair- However i got the following:

"Start up repair cannot repair this computer automatically"

I clicked on 'View problem detais'

Sorry,
Your registry is corrupt. If you do not have it backed up or cannot get to System Restore, reinstall may be the only answer. System Restore would solve this problem.

I'd like to do a system restore...

But as i said in my last few posts- When i try that i get: "Failed with a Catastrophic failure"

Aren't there any other options?

I do not know of any other options. If it is a registry problem (the brain of the OS) it must be repaired, something I do not know how to do other than by the means I suggested.

So my only 'real' option would be to do is reinstall the O/s and the data?

Will this bsod arise again- Due to hardware?

Anything I can do to prevent this?

With the new information, I no longer think that it is hardware. A registry problem, can cause the computer not to work in safe mode. Not working in safe mode is a usual indication that it is hardware, but registry can also cause the problem.
Do you have stuff that you want to save before a reinstall?

Yes,

There is allot of my fathers data (he passed away recently) that is on the laptop - I.e. Documents, images, video's.

As the laptop originally belonged to him.

Glad that I asked
This is the Ubuntu OS. If you can install it and use it, you DO NOT have a hardware problem.
If you can install it follow instructions to save your stuff. I know that stuff is important to you, I lost my Dad recently, and have stuff from him that is very important to me. Do not forget, after this is done remind me to give you a method to be sure this never happens, again.
