First off thanks for having me, and if this is in the wrong section please move it to the correct one.
I got a Dell Vostro 220 with Vista business 32bit from a friend that had bought a new computer because this one was giving him problems. Seems he had gotten a ransom ware virus of some sort ie; your computer has been locked, pay this and we will unlock it kind of deals.
When I got it it would hang at the splash screen and wouldnt go any farther. I ran Dr. Web boot cd and it found a bunch of trojans and crap so I let it clean them up and rebooted. Big mistake, as on the reboot I got a \boot\bcd error 0xc0000098.
I couldnt get the F8 restore to work only F2 to Bios and F12 boot selection. I could boot from a Vista DVD and attempted to repair the boot\bcd error but the DVD could not find the OS. I can see the partitions and folders using either Vista CD or ubuntu. I ran Memtest for a while, no issues. I used Acronis and made an image to an external HD.
I did some searching on the net and found a way to get the restore image to run from the command prompt from the Vista cd by using imagex /apply d:\dell\image\factory.wim 1 c:\ after doing that and rebooting the bcd\boot error is gone, I get the Vista splash screen with the green bar on the bottom for a second or two then it reboots, gets to the Vista splash screen and reboots, etc.
I put the Vista DVD back in and it will now say there is a problem with starting or something and repair and reboot but I still get the loop. It will also recognize the OS.
I am getting closer to being able to boot, so just thought I would ask for anything I might be overlooking.
Any help would be appreciated.
