Accidently Did System Restore with no Restore Points

Hello,
I ran a system restore without creating restore points. The computer will start up but after a minute I get a blue screen. The screen tells me to restart my computer to fix the problem and if that doesn't work, other options.

I don't know much about computers/operating systems and I don't want to make this worse. Is there anyway to do "undo" a system restore? I know I can't do it in safe mode or in normal mode (it does not give me an "undo" option, let alone, restore points). I'm running Vista, 64 bit.

I followed all the steps through:

"3. Run a System Health Report -
START | type perfmon /report - a viewer will appear.."

However, a viewer then appears and reads the following:

"Error: An Error Occurred while attempting to generate the report"

"The system cannot find the path specified"

Thank you for your assistance with this.

First, lets make sure you are set up to write the reports

Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD - Windows 7 Forums

1. Press the WinKey + Pause.
2. Click Advanced, and under Start Up and Recovery, select Settings.
3. Uncheck Automatically Restart.
4. Click on the dropdown arrow under Write Debugging Information.
5. Select Small Memory Dump (64 KB) and make sure the output is %SystemRoot%\Minidump.
6. Restart the PC normally, as this will allow the System to error and Blue Screen and then create the Minidump.

Did Step 1-4. When I get to step 5, there are only three options
- Kernal memory dump (selected)
- none
- Small memory dump (128 KB)

When I do select "Small memory dump (128 kb)", the "%SystemRoot%\Minidump" is available. I assume I should select this....but I'd prefer confirmation from you as I'm batting 0 when I do make changes... Please let me know how to proceed.

Ok, I have followed the directions. Here is what happens (in normal mode and safe mode)

NORMAL MODE: I am unable to run the health report in normal operation as the computer flashes to the BSOD before the operation can finish.

SAFE MODE: I am able to run the health report in safe mode. It does create a file (Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2) with various documents. When I do run the "perform /report" task in start I still get the same error message viewer message:


"Error: An Error Occurred while attempting to generate the report"

"The system cannot find the path specified"

I did notice a slight difference between your directions and the link you provided (Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD - Windows 7 Forums)
. It says to "check automatic restart" and your directions indicate to "uncheck automatic restart". Not sure it is significant but just wanted to highlight that.

OK, you did good. Will take time to analyze all the dumps. In the meantime, try the clean boot that I gave you above.

Did the clean boot and the computer is back to normal operating condition: No BSOD screen and internet access in normal mode. At least we know it's not broken (knock on wood)

Not sure if this solved the problem but I assume that I'll need to do redo some configurations considering all the changes we did. Let me know. Much appreciated....

OK Good news. These new reports are quite clear. Its your Symantic protection. Uninstall using the uninstall tool from their website

and install the free Microsoft Security Essentials. The specific driver with the problem is
SRTSPL64.SYS
We could have solved this one with the clean boot, too.

Clean boot is just a test, you should not work that way indefinately. Put it all back.

LOL. You must be in the midwest. I'm in Chicago. I have yet to shovel my car out....

Everything seems to be working fine. Here's what I've done:
- uninstalled symantic anti-virus
- installed microsoft security essentials (I'll be using it as my antivirus)
- msconfig'ed and reschecked automatic startup (However, I did not change the automatic dump back to small kernal. Left it at the "128 KB". Should I change it back to the small kernal?)
- manually created a restore point. I didn't initially have a restore point and did a system restore without doing it...which is exactly when the problem began
- put plastic insulation on my windows (the ones on the front of my apartment-not the one on my computer)

I am grateful for your help and would appreciate any final thoughts on what I should do further-just in case (and no hurry)

The origin of this problem has to do with Battlefield 3 on Thursday night. My computer was lagging during gameplay (I play online with friends) and a friend suggested I download AVG pc tune-up to fix the issue. He strongly suggested that I create a system restore point before I did. When I tried to do this there was no option for creating a restore point (hence, no previous restore point) and I stupidly hit the "system restore" button and voila!-BSOD. Found out later that you have to manually create restore points in Vista. I could have used that info a bit earlier....

Now that I created a "restore point" I plan to download AVG Tune-up....but not today. I'm going to do some more research on it to ensure this issue does not arise again...

You are suppose to create a restore point, first, in case of problems. I think that you were trying to go back with a restore point

Never use those automatic reg cleaners, or tunes ups. This is how to take care of your computer. Dont listen to anything others say.

Steps that I did not notice on the guide include:

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag

Using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

Making System Restore points, at least once a week

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)

Not relying on your A/V common sense, should prevail. You know of many sites can cause a problem.

Do not use any reg cleaning or optimizing software.

Download and use Ccleaner about once every two months. Untick any registry entries.

Thanks, Rich. This is all great advice and I am taking it (downloading the CCleaner as I write this). I'm pretty cautious on the computer regarding websites (never have pop-ups or click on stuff to lead me down a rabbit hole of problems). Just use it for work, school....and of course battlefield :rolleyes:
