Hi,
Here is a scan log of my errors, I would be eternally grateful if someone could help..
I've had a problem running Steam for months now, and think that I've tracked it down to a missing/corrupted dciman32.dll file.. But I don't know how to correct it..

That error has 3 usual causes
Hardware
Virus or registry.

Registry, unless you have it backed up, you must reinstall
if Hardware you must bring your computer into the shop to be repaired
if Virus, run a full anti virus scan. Download and run a malwarebytes scan
If not a virus, make a system restore from before the problem. Run an SFC command
If this does not work, test the hardware.

Hi Rich,

Thanks very much for your help. I ran a malwarebytes scan, and it found nothing. I don't think there's a problem with the hardware, so it's quite possibly a registry problem. Would running a SFC scan with the Vista disc inserted repair the corrupted/missing files? And would a registry cleaner help? As I said, I'm not very clued up on technical things, so a clean install scares me.

Never use those registry cleaners. The best way to fix registry is to do a system restore. Your problem may be too old, however to do a System Restore before the problem The best way to fix registry, unfortunately, is a reinstall.

Yes, unfortunately with Windows7, it only seems to give me the last (and very recent) restore point to choose, which is baffling really. Thanks for the link, although I'm afraid it's lost on me. Maybe I could return my PC to the manufacturer for them to fix.. or bite the bullet and attempt a reinstall. Everything else seems to be working ok, it's just so annoying that Steam won't work, and therefore I can't play any of the games that I purchased that use it.

You never go to unfamiliar sites and download. You can get much more than you bargained for. You get nothing for nothing in todays world. I do not know about that specific site, but the possiblity exists that they can hack your computer and get all your bank passwords, credit cards etc. You may be lucky and you only get malware and tons of pop ups and advertisements.

The best way to start is with the SFC. Look at the tutorial. Ask questions, I and others will be glad to answer questions. The SFC is not hard.

This might be a good opportunity to upgrade to Windows Seven. If you are interested, the upgrade DVD will cost about $125.00. We can even test to see if your computer can handle Seven.

Thank you Rich, I won't do that then. I found the CD that came with my computer and it is Windows7. If I back everything up and reinstall Windows7, can I simply replace all my backed-up files?

If you back up properly, everything, except programs can be replaced. Programs (games, Microsoft Office, etc) must be reinstalled. Some may need key numbers.
Everything that you paid for has a key number, which must be used.

I have obtained a copy of dciman32.dll from my other computer that uses Windows XP. Would it be possible to simply paste it into my system32 folder, on my Windows7 computer?

I think I may try the startup repair.. The above doesn't sound right.. Will I still need to back-up files if I do this? And will the startup repair fix registry files?

I have had dciman.32dll problems for some time now. Getting the message "not designed to run on Windows". My (novice) solution was to a complete search of my C: drive for dciman32.dll - including system & hidden files. I noticed that some of the file sizes were 0kb so I copied one of the good files 14kb and replaced the 0kb files with the good one. To do this you have to take ownership of the file. You will find our how to do this in the Tutorial section. I then tested this method with Quicktime player & received a different error message but Quicktime opened ok. My next step was to copy dciman32.dll to the Quicktime programme folder & I no longer get any error message. Please note that I am a novice & you attempt this fix at your own risk. I did a sfc scan & the resulting log still indicates a problem. At least it works for me & I did not have to fork out £25 for a commercial programme as suggested by Microsoft! (I wonder if they get commission). Come on MS you should have a free fix for this as it is your OS.... Good luck to anyone who tries my amateur fix.
