Windows vista home premium freezing

Hi
this morning i turned my computer on as usual, after selecting 'Start windows Normally' the computer took me to the user login page (as usual) however when i go to select my icon to log in the whole system freezes (the mouse wont move and i cant select my icon using the arrow keys on my keyboard) i know that the keyboard is functioning properly it just seems to be the display on the screen that has frozen!!
But alas theres nothing i can do to fix it!

anyone got any tips??
(my computer is a dell with vista home premium, if that helps)

Try a system restore from before the problem. Go with safe mode if that is all that you can do.

If possible make an anti virus scan first. Download and make a full scan with malwarebytes.

Thank you Brink and Richc46 for your advice however neither the Safe mode; Safe mode with networking or Safe Mode with command promps are working.
they all take me back to the user login icons which then makes the copmputer freeze!!
is there anything else i can do??

No I dont think i do, i can always buy one if thats going to help.
Naa I wasnt able to because I cant do anything appart from being able to chose Safe mode; Safe mode with networking or Safe Mode with command promps but eventually they all lead back to the user icons etc and by extension freezes

I have had the same trouble, only mine goes in sleep mode, won't wake up, can move my mouse, but clicking does nothing. SOooo.. I unplugged it, for a while, reset my modem, plugged it back in, and went to the Power Mode Options... setting it to NEVER sleep... No sleep mode, should alleviate this problem. This has been a reacurring problem of which Microsoft has no real solution from what I've read so far... only option, pc never sleeps, should stay 'on' for you, but no power savings. Hope that helps until...____
