Solved How to find lost files in Vista Home Basic personal folders?

Two days ago, whilst I was using the internet, the computer crashed (a blue screen appeared then rebooted itself; can't remember the error message). Reboot was okay, settings were normal. The next day when I switched the computer on, a windows recovery error message appeared; my original wallpaper was missing, replaced by the blue classic windows colour. All my personal folders on the desktop were missing. The windows recovery error message said something like, some sectors of the hard drive had errors. I thought the message was a hoax &/or virus so I tried to close the window and check for viruses & malware. I couldn't close the error window even via the CTRL, ALT, DEL Task Manager, so had to force a reboot. Now subsequent reboots don't show the error message, but my original wallpaper is still missing & all my personal folders on the desktop are missing. Other folders on the C-drive e.g. Documents, Music, Pictures etc are all missing. The Microsoft office programs are all missing from the desktop and not shown on Start>Programs....
Ran error check via C-drive> Properties > Tools: no errors found. No viruses or malware attacks found. Tried the 'restoring' function via Start > Setting > Control Panel > Backup & restore centre, but after the restore auto reboot it gave a message saying that 'restore failed'.
Please can someone help to explain how I can get the missing folders back and return my system to its original settings.

In view of a number of things at faultI would like you to do the following please:-

AV & Malware.
First, to assist in the elimination of possible virus and/or malware.
I would ask you to please use your Anti-virus full scan program facilities, making sure, you have updated the software first. Please advise us of the results.

If you do not have any anti-virus loaded please go to this link and download Microsoft Security Essentials :- Anti-Malware, Virus, Spyware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials

Secondly, please download:- malwarebytes Malwarebytes a Malware searching program, again, an updated full scan. Notify results please. Both these programs are Freeware

The computer boots okay and loads windows as before but I still only get the 'blue windows classic wallpaper' not my wallpaper and all the folders/files are still missing as before, and nothing has changed. (This was the same 'blue screen' I was getting before and not the 'blue screen of death').
I am able to use the internet since firefox and internet explorer are available. I currently use firefox version 3.6.3. I frequently have problems with firefox now and before the 'crash'. Occasionally when a pop-up window opens, firefox freezes and I have to do a CTRL, ALT, DEL to close the browser. This problem happens very randomly.

If the problem still persists please carry out the following operation:-


System File Checker, this makes sure that all the system files are where they should be. The sfc /scannow command scans all the protected system files and replaces incorrect, corrupted, or damaged versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
In the results area, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You may/will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue.

At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.
Please take note of space after sfc.

The scan may take some time, so be patient. Windows will attempt to repair any corrupted or missing files that it finds.

No guarantee can be given that the SFC scan will be able to repair all the damaged, incorrect, corrupt etc., files.

If faulty files are found, please run sfc /scannow 3 times.
Please upload CBS.LOG results in your next post.

I had the same thing happen to me and my scans report no virus. When it scans through all the files it finds them but when doing to the directory they are not there. I also reverted to the earliest system restore and got a few of the files back but most are still missing. I did not realized when this first occured but now I am trying to fix it.

Tried the clean boot method deselecting both the services and startup tasks, but the same problem exists.

Tried sfc /scannow & chkdsk: no errors found, see below

Please can someone help to explain how I can get the missing folders back and return my system to its original settings.

Do your system restore again. This time do it in safe mode.

Here is how to get to Safe Mode:
Shut down your computer > turn it back on, and immediately and repeatedly tap F8 key until you see a black and white screen. Use the up/down arrow key and select Safe Mode.

System Restore
Start button > search box, type system restore >press Enter key > uac prompt > click Choose a different restore point > Next > select the date as your restore point, click it > Next > Finish
Sit back and wait. The machine will re-start when it is done.

From t-4-2s advice; I manged to get into safe mode (windows desktop with black wallpaper and large icons, still with missing folders). From there I went onto Start > Search > Files & Folders > typed 'system restore' > Enter.
No files were found; I also tried the Advanced search with boxed ticked for 'Include non-indexed, hidden, system files'. Again no files were found and I was unable to proceed any further.
Previously I had tried to do a system restore via 'normal' windows Start > Settings > Control Panel > Backup and Restore center.

Should I try another attempt at system restore?

Should I try a registry cleaner? e.g.

When you did your system restore in safe mode, did you pick a date when you did NOT have this problem as your restore point ?
If you just use the restore point offered by the system, it won't do you any good whatsoever, because the system would put your computer back to a date when you already had this probelm.

NEVER, NEVER use registry cleaner.
CCleaner is very good IF you stay way from registry option.

NO. The SOONER you do what Richc told you, the better chance you have recovering the missing files.

In reply to t-4-t I tried restoring again but again it failed when I chose a restore point within 5 days. I tried another attempt to restore, this time with AV avast switched off and the last date on the list the 17th April 2011. Restore this time was successful; but I still have the same problem with missing files and worse I have the windows recovery error message again, which initially started all the problems I've been having. I think this is a virus/malware (see screenshot) and my windows desktop has now turned black. I'm unable to close the windows recovery window, and this is preventing me from activating AV avast. I am running a full scan at the moment with Malwarebytes. This will take some time, so I will let it run while I go to sleep (1 am now here in the UK).

Everyone has a different opinion on regisrty cleaners, I like CCleaner but if you are not experienced with the regisrty don't play around as you will do more damage then good.

Even though I have the CCleaner I do not use it to clean the regisrty...
