Vista only works in safemode

Hi
First posting so be nice! I am running Vista Home Basic and it will only work in safemode. When i try to run normal mode it will start, my startup screen opens and then shuts down. i have removed recently a large amount of Malware from my machine and thought it would fix the problem. I have disabled all start up actions and still no start.
I am thinking I might have to format harddrive:( but before i do this, will upgrading to Windows 7 fix this problem or am i better to format and start over.

Run a full AV...
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes free version...
