I'm trying to fix my friend's Toshiba Satellite A215-S5818 laptop. Vista Home Premium 32 bit. no changes to pre-installed product.
I'm not sure what caused this, but when she (and I) turn on the computer there is a gray screen and then it won't do anything else. If I try to go into Safe Mode by pressing F8, same thing. If I try to press F2 or F10, same thing. I did try to boot into safe mode and normal mode using her password, and it was acting like it was loading windows, but the gray screen won't go away. I can't see anything on it.
She doesn't have boot CDs or anything like that. If anyone can help me that would be great. I am really good with computers, so I can take things apart and put them back together if I need to.
I do know that it was fine and this started suddenly. Also, it may be important to note that it won't go into hibernate/sleep mode.
I'm going to take a look tomorrow to make sure the video connections are secure, and then later I will take it to a family member's house so I can see if it will behave on an external monitor.
