Vista won't boot up after update

Toshiba laptop running Vista Home Premium. A friend asked for help removing the Antivirus 2010 malware. So I ran both Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware on his system and cleaned it up, rebooted and all seemed fine. We noticed that the Windows Update icon was alerting us to updates being available so we let that run. It loaded updates for the .Net Framework and RealTek network controller. Now the system will not boot up.

We tried normal boot, last good boot and Safe Mode with the same results. It gets to the screen with the green activity bar and just stays there forever. When trying Safe Mode, it just lists all the drivers like normal but justt says there. We have tried each of these several times.

Normally I might try to remove the latest updates but can't do that if I can't boot up in some manner. I would appreciate any assistance with this.

Do you know when this problem began (with the installations)? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates. Use the recovery disk if the system prompt doesn’t work. The recovery disk works a bit different from the above procedures but if you follow the prompts from the System Restore menu option with the above information you should be able to restore with no problems.

To boot to the CD you may need to change the BIOS to make the CD-drive first in the boot sequence. To do that, wait for the screen that tells you the F key to push to access the boot menu or boot setup. Push it quickly. Make the changes, save your work, and exit. Put the CD in the drive and reboot. When prompted, push any key to boot from the CD.

If you don't have a disk, you can make a bootable Recovery Disk using http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ along with burning software like: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html and, of course, a blank CD (perhaps made on a different computer).

That should remove the updates and get you booting again. Then I would NOT do the device update (I suggest you never use Windows Updates for device drivers). Check the KB articles on the updates and make sure you need them and, if so, do them one at a time manualy and reboot after each to make sure the problem doesn't return and then create a system restore point and try the next one. If you find one that causes the problem, System Restore to just before it and put it aside. When done, post the name and KB number of that update and we'll see what we can find out about it.
