Major Problem, URGENT HELP PLEASE, guys

Hey guys,

I was on my pc the other day and I was starting up COD2 and just like that, windows went down and I got this blue screen saying windows had been shut down to prevent damage or something. After that the pc rebooted and everything was fine, except for some flickering of the screen sometimes which I knew wasn't good. Yesterday I booted my pc and the same thing happened when I started COD2. Today my pc didn't even boot anymore, right after the IDE screen (black and white) the blue screen popped up showing the same message and the pc shut down. Only safe mode will work. Can this have anything to do with CPU instability or overheating?

Please help guys, but oh well I know this great forum and its users won't let me down

Could you possibly let us know what the error code for the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) was? For example:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Stop 0x0000000A

Also, did the BSOD mention a filename of some kind that could possibly belong to a driver?

Yes I'd already seen that name somewhere, thought it might be that, cool name But ok, I also ran a chkdsk in safe mode and the error code was: I had three different ones: 1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, 2:PC_INDEX_MISMATCH, 3: an attempt was made to write to read-only memory. i also got a file name I think, an nVIDIA driver I guess: nvstor64.sys ... Does that help? Why does he give me different reasons? Could I really have done that much wrong...:s
It also says in the bottom: collecting data for crash dump...
initializing disk for crash dump...
beginning dump of physical memory (DOES NOT SOUND GOOD!!:s:s)
dumping physical memory to disk: 20
And something about disabling caching and shadowing. Should I do this?

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL:
Stop 0xD1 messages can occur after installing faulty drivers or system services. If a driver is listed by name, disable, remove, or roll back that driver to confirm that this resolves the error. If so, contact the manufacturer about a possible update. Using updated software is especially important for backup programs, multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, DVD playback, and CD mastering tools.

You mentioned the "nvstor64.sys" file. This belongs to the SATA controller on your motherboard. You should try updating this driver.

PC_INDEX_MISMATCH
I've never sen this one before, and there isn't much about it on Google. What was the STOP code that was displayed with this one? I searched for this on Microsoft's support site and came up with 0 results...



Don't worry about the "dump of physical memory". That's perfectly normal for a BSOD. The data that is "dumped" can likely be used by the programmers at Microsoft to help determine what caused the error. Normal people like ourselves have no use for that info.

As for the caching and shadowing, what you can try is go into your PC BIOS, and carefully go through each of the available sections. Anything that may be labelled "cache" or "shadow" should be disabled, whit the exception of "CPU Cache", which should remain on.

One other setting that you could look for is something about "32-Bit Disk Access". Make sure that those settings are turned on for all hard disks and hard disk controllers.

just had a look for PC INDEX MISMATCH and found nothing, however there is a thing called APC INDEX MISMATCH. The information on the web is that this can be caused by a faulty driver.

If you can get hold of the specific drivers for your motherboard and graphics I would reinstall these.

No problem Dzomlija Ok I'll do that in the safe mode. Yes, sorry it's probably APC INDEX MISMATCH, the BSOD came in wrong resolution, so some parts were invisible. I'll update/install/reinstall the SATA driver and if that doesn't work, reinstall all of my drivers, right? What is caching and shadowing?

Hi Amplid,

Sorry to hear about your latest problem. Since you can get into safe mode, have you tried performing a system restore to a time before you had this problem? Have you been able to run COD2 prior to you having the problem or did the problem occur when you first ran the game? It could be that you need a patch for this game in order for it to work correctly, and that this patch needs to be installed prior to you running the game for the first time. You could also try seeing if other people have had problems similar to yours when running this game. I enclose a link to the Call of Duty website. Check the Forum section.

Ehmm, oh yes it was working fine! It's not the game, it's something else and I can't do the last known good configuration, because I get the BSOD again when I do that. I'm on the safe mode with internet now, searching for drivers.

Well I don't remember really, I just rolled back the driver to the one that was installed in 2007 and so far no BSOD so... But I'll tell you guys how it works out tomorrow, gotta get off pc (mother...).

Hope the problem is sorted...

Shadowing is copying areas from rom into ram for faster access. Cacheing is used as a tempory storage area so data can be moved around faster. This is a basic explanation, for more info look at google.

I updated the driver for my nForce 430 system management, but it didn't really help...
By now I got two knew failure notes: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT and PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_ARIA. the first one I got just once, the other multiple times. I can't boot into my safe mode anymore either, because I get a message saying: Windows Activation: Your activation period has expired. Restart your computer in normal mode to activate windows.
Can this have anything to do with it? I know I have to activate my OS now, but I can't as you see...
Hmm so I updated the ATA controller driver and disabled everything in my BIOS that had anything to with 'cache' (thanks for short info Roy), but it hasn't helped so far and I can't boot up, neither in safe(windows activation), nor in normal mode(BSOD)... Could this have anything to do with a Trojan or so?

Is it a legal copy installed on one computer? Was it properly activated before you had the issues? Did you do a system restore?

Ouch. It's getting nastier by the second!

There is one other setting in the BIOS that you can check. If anything to do with APIC was turned on when Windows was installed, it could wreak havoc with the installation if it is suddenly turned off. Go have a look see if thats the case.

APIC, fyi, stands for "Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller".

But it wasn't me who installed vista... Or do you mean the driver? How do I check this? Yes it is a legal copy, installed on just one computer. I don't know, I had it installed for me, but I guess most people don't activate it when installing, for if there's a problem. So I don't know reallly, anyway to check it? I just managed to get into my safe mode again, after getting into the normal mode for like 5 minutes and it activated, it said Windows was activated...

No, that's in the BIOS right, system restore? No haven't tried that before...

Vista and newer MS applications require activation to use. This includes XP. So it does state its activated once you get into regular mode? What is in the event viewer?

I tried a system restore, but it stopped and I got a BSOD again, should I try to restore it further, or wouldn't that help if it BSOD'd during restore?

All I found in that Event viewer was: the Windows Process Activation Service entered the running state.
I also found this: the following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: i8042prt.
Does that help? I can give you the error codes that occur on the BSOD too if it helps...:s
Huh, and look what they saud, explaining that I couldn't open windows update: The Windows Update Service terminated with the following error: Windows Update is not a valid Win32 application.
What is that with 32? I have 64-bit... Or nothing to do with that?

Sorry for the many editing, but I think I found one program that's incompatible, that's what event viewer says: In windows, syswow64 a driver called GEARAspiWDM. How can I delete that? Not to the bin right...

there's something about a security package called Kerberos... I didn't install that...

Also the NMSaccesU failed to start, as well as avast antivirus

Also says: DCOM got error 1084 attempting to start the service ShellHWDetection with arguments in order to run the server.

And a lot more of that and the GEARAspiWDM and i0842 errors...

You're pretty new with computers and such, right? Let me give you a bit of advise - reformatting and reinstalling should be used as an absolute last resort, when you have exhausted all other means of fixing the problem, and you are 100% sure beyond any shadow of doubt that re-installing is the only way out.

How else are you gonna learn how to fix computers?

But to recap:

You've tried drivers, BIOS settings, and System Restore.

So far, nadda. If you can still get into safe mode, have you tried to use MSCONFIG to disable all non-critical startup programs and services? It can take awhile, but disabling everything and then enabling each one at a time with a reboot untill the problem returns is another method you can try. Once you find the "problem child", keep it disabled, and enable the rest, and hopefully the problem goes away.

EXACTLY what motherboard are you using, and with which BIOS version? Perhaps as a last-ditch effort before reloading Windows you can try a BIOS update? To make sure a BSOD doesn't kill the update process, you'd better do that from a bootable CD or something outside of Windows...
