Unable to open mhtml files in Windows Vista

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium with IE7. I have saved some mhtml files on my hard disk and I am unable to open those files. IE7 just throws a error message as "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" when I try to open any of the mhtml files.

I was able to open the same files on Windows XP with IE6.

Any solutions?

Hi Shawn,

I checked out my Default Programs in Control Panel and it says .mhtml files are associated with Internet Explorer. Still I am unable to open the files.

I have tried using Opera 9.22 browser but not of any help.

Any other troubleshooting to carry?

For a test, save this post as a .mhtml file and try to open it in another tab in IE7.

If you try to open the files offline you may get that error in IE7, but it should still open the file with a few missing item markers in it.

I have Digital issues of Windows IT Pro Magazine which are actually saved as mhtml files which I can open using IE6 but I have a laptop on which I have Windows Vista Home Premium installed which has IE7. I cannot open these Magazine issues on my laptop with IE7.

My laptop is at my home and I am sitting at my office. My office desktop is a Windows XP SP2 machine with IE6 where I can successfully open files.

Hence the solution what you say " For a test, save this post as a .mhtml file and try to open it in another tab in IE7." will open on my office PC but for trying the same stuff on my laptop I can check it only on my return to home.

I have just saved this post and tried opening on my office PC and it is opening fine on my Win XP machine but I am concerned about my laptop.

You will not be able to install Outlook Express on Vista. Windows Mail is the new OE. You can install Outlook 2003 or newer on Vista though.

I was just thinking that it may be a incompatibility issue from a older version of OE, but surely not from the OE from XP. It's not that old.

Have you tried opening the mhtml files on another Vista machine other than your laptop to see if it may just be it?

I just tried opening the same file on one of the PC in my office which has Vista Enterprise installed and still it is not opening up.

I renamed the same file to mht file and still no go.

My head is going blank on this.

You might try installing Mozilla Firefox on the Vista laptop and see if it will open it for you. Firefox tends to work better than IE7 with these issues. You can easily uninstall it if it does not work.

I hope it does to. If it makes you feel any better, while researching this, there seems to be a lot more people with the same problem. Unfortunately, none of them had a solution to the problem.

I am having the same issue. From what I've been able to research, it looks as if they've locked down mhtml files due to an exploit found in Vista/IE7. According to MS, the vulnerability is in Windows Mail(Vista's OE) and there's 2 security patches that address the problem but still do not allow IE7 to open MHTML files. It also seems like MS doesn't want to acknowledge the issue as being an IE7 issue. I was unable to find any information about this on any MS affiliated web site.
