Chrome Updates or Security Fixes Ending Apr. 2016

"Today, we’re announcing the end of Chrome’s support for Windows XP, as well as Windows Vista, and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8, since these platforms are no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple. Starting April 2016, Chrome will continue to function on these platforms but will no longer receive updates and security fixes."

This is from Nov. 10 but I was only notified today after a hard restart of my PC. Isn't Vista being supported by Microsoft until 2017? Anyone know anything more about this? Thanks.

Vista went into extended support on April 10, 2012 which will end April 11, 2017. An OS in extended support receives only security updates. Application suppliers can of course follow their own timeline.

Google had formerly intended to end support for XP much sooner, but postponed it twice due to the large number of users still running XP. Unfortunately Vista has a relatively small number of users, and some software products have already ended support for it (notably Adobe Reader, Apple iTunes, Avira antivirus). Mainstream support for Windows 7 has also ended, but you don't see software vendors abandoning it because of its large user base.

One major browser that has not announced any plans to end support for Vista is Firefox, which I'm using. Of course IE 9 will continue to receive security patches on Vista until April 2017, but it is obsolescent at best.

Thanks for the replies. When Chrome says Vista will no longer receive updates or security fixes does that mean new versions of Chrome won't be available for Vista users to install manually or at all? I've used Firefox briefly before but I find the look of it as it scrolls a page strange.

We can't know that but I doubt that any new versions will be released for Vista at all.

I expect that any version of Chrome released after April 2016 would no longer run on Vista. To me releasing a product that runs on an OS that you no longer support would be a contradiction in terms. Certainly it would not be tested on Vista. Whether it runs or not doing so would not be a good idea.

Supporting an old OS is a burden to a software supplier. As long as that OS has a large enough user base this is easy to justify. But when the OS has a small and shrinking user base at some point it is considered more trouble than it is worth. .Dropping support for Vista allows the developers to freely use features found only in Windows 7 and later,

I just installed Firefox again this morning, after using Chrome for over 3 years. I was surprised how easy it was to set it up with favorites toolbar, sidebar with categorized bookmarks, and same plug ins I had on Chrome. It's not the same lame Firefox I ditched when I went over to Chrome. I plan to get a new desktop with a current OS and processor before MS stops the updates, but will take my time shopping around.
