Import WLM messages to Windows Mail

I paid a tech to install WLM on my Vista Home Premium SP2 system. MISTAKE!!!

WLM has now become messed up and I'm thinking it might have something to do with Windows Updates. Additionally, I have never like it very well anyway. It's a confusing mess as far as I'm concerned.

I was going to un- and reinstall WLM, but the Microsoft download page I was directed to says Windows Live Mail 2011 is no longer available for download for Vista.

Then I went to a Microsoft site which offered chat and the person I talked with there confirmed this. So it appears that doing a clean, fresh install of WLM is not an option.

What I would like to do is ...
1. Delete all folders and messages from my Windows Mail account, which I quit using when I started using WLM.
2. Import the folders/messages I now have in WLM back into my Windows Mail program.

Can I do this? I Googled this and found lots of instruction for importing Windows Mail messages into WLM, but not the other way around.

Would you please address this portion of my email? I gotta' tell you that I'm real leary about un- and reinstalling because I'm scared I'll get everything deleted and then find out I can't reinstall it, especially after that tech on the Microsoft chat line told me Windows Live Mail is, in fact, no longer available for Vista. If I can import the WLM storage folders I have copied to my external into my old Windows Mail program, which is still present on this computer and I can still open, I think I'd like to try that first.

What I would like to do is ...

Hi,

Is your email account a Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) or Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) account, as Windows Mail does not support the HTTP:// protocol.

This is the crux of your problem. I would say you need to install Office Outlook to get the best of both worlds (Compatibility).

Do you have that?

The thing that puzzles me is that this thing with the images in emails just started. Things had been rolling along just fine, without problems, and then, this started ... along with the Storage Folder problem.

My account is POP3. As far as I can see, I do not have Office Outlook. Is this free?

Can I import the storage folders from WLM into Windows Mail?

Hi,

Unfortunately Office is not free, but it would solve your problem.

From all the information I can find you can only go one way from Windows mail & that is to Windows Live Mail not backwards.

So, you are left with a decision: -

Uninstall & Re-install or Office Outlook. As you have a back up I would try the uninstall & re-install option as you can "Get out of jail" with office. Unfortunately that will come at a price.

You might be able to pick-up a cheap Office 2007 version on the various on-line auction sites etc.

What are your thoughts?

Well, Outlook is out of the question because I do not have the money for that.

So if I uninstall and reinstall and it won't work, then I'm probably in trouble ... because ... even though I have a backup copy on my external, would I even be able to open those emails if I no longer have Windows Live Mail (or Outlook) on my computer ???

Do you think it's safe to do the uninstall and reinstall when supposedly Windows Live Mail 2011 is no longer available for download for Vista?

The download link I have provided is the full version 215MB (UK English) file for installation when "off line or an online connection is not available".

So, it is a complete Windows Live installation & you will get Windows Live back!

Well, I am totaly befuddled now. I uninstalled Windows Live Essentials. The uninstall was successfull, but I went into Users/Name/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows Live Mail and all the folders were there, with their respective emails inside.
I went forward and installed WLM through the file I downloaded at the link you gave me and when the program opened I had everything there just like it was before, so I wonder if I have gained anything.

I guess I will have to wait until my cousin sends me one of his emails and see if I can forward it. I had finally cleaned them all out and deleted before I uninstalled and reinstalled so I don't have any.

Also, I am getting a pop up. It came up once during uninstall and once during reinstall and now it keeps popping up. I have selected "NO" each time. I still have Windows Mail on this computer and I don't want to mess anything up with that in case this WLM quits working. I have attached a screenshot of the window in question and ask if you could advise.

I understand your concern but that request is only asking to change the default handling of emails to your new email software.

So, saying yes will not hurt anything & will stop the annoying request.

In one of the early posts you showed your email address. For Your Information and any other members, never show your address online. There are spambots (equipment to pick up phone numbers and address) for the sole purpose of obtaining personal information and then sending your spam and who knows what else. I removed the address.

I clicked "yes" this morning when that window popped up again.

As to that email you forwarded to me ... I think that happened to be one that I was able to forward before, altho things have become a bit confused. I'll have to wait until I receive more emails from him and will let you know what happens with them.

I thought when I uninstalled WLM that it would uninstall EVERYTHING. But apparently it left the entire store folder intact. Is that the way it's supposed to work?

I'm not sure what options you get when you uninstall that program, I do not use it but would have thought there was a tick box to choose remove or keep, lets just wait & see what happens with the next message.

There were two options: to uninstall the entire Windows Live Essentials or select which parts to remove. I chose the selection and what appeared was just "Mail" because that is the only part of the program I had installed in the first place. Still can't understand at all why uninstall would not have removed everything, including the Store Folder, since that's part of the program.

I replied to you on the email you sent. If that was one of those that I couldn't forward "with pictures" before, it did go through this time. My cousin usually sends me several every day that have pictures on them but just because I'm waiting to test things, now he's silent. :rolleyes:

I simply can not afford Office. I've had this Dell desktop for years (and LOVE IT) and have been forwarding my cousin's emails with no problems until recently. It just does not make sense to me that suddenly I need office. But another thing that does not make sense to me is why my emails are coming through as "text" when you have seen that I have "html" selected.

I have another cousin who sends me emails and I don't have problems with hers, yet. Think I'll try sending you one of hers the next time I get one.

Also, I have a newer 17" Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail. I rarely use it because I really love and prefer my Dell desktop. My WLM is the same email address on both computers. The next time cuz sends me emails I think I will download them into the WLM on that computer, forward one to you and see what happens.

Hi,

Please check your settings against mine for the following.

The important bit is the text wrapping section. You need to increase the "Indent message on reply" (Word wrapping) to Max, so change the "Quoted Printable"setting to "None" & increase the number to 132 (Max). Then change the "None" back to Quoted Printable".

This should stop the WLM software from adding in carriage returns & Line feeds, thus corrupting the HTML coding.

It won't retain the setting. I've done it four times now, just as you instructed. It reverts right back to 76.

On my Windows 7 laptop, it is the same thing. I changed it and it immediately reverts back to 76.I do notice on the laptop that the box "Indent message on reply" is checked, and I didn't do that so it must have loaded as default that way.

I got an email from cuz today with an imbedded picture on it and I can't forward it with the picture on this computer or the laptop. I'm beginning to wonder if this is all on HIS end???

Would it be possible for you to forward something to me (not from him) that has imbedded pictures so I can see what happens?
