Solved IE9 causing problems with Flash (ie YouTube)

Hi all.

I upgraded to IE9 via Windows Update and all went well.

But I'm having issues with watching flash videos on YouTube & Hulu using IE9 with "ActiveX Filtering" enabled. Basically the flash video will not play and instead shows a black screen that prompts you to update your flash player (see attached image). Flash player and add-ons are up to date and installed (v10.2.153.1).

Now if I disable "ActiveX Filtering," flash videos in YouTube & Hulu will play just fine. But I'm worried that disabing an important protection would leave me vulnerable to attack/infection.

What should I do to fix this problem?

follow these steps:
1. Uninstall The Flash Player

2. To change your security level:

Open Internet Explorer.
Choose Tools > Internet Options.
Select the Security tab.
Select Custom Level.
Find the section "ActiveX controls and plug-ins".
Set ' Download Signed ActiveX Controls' to Prompt.
Set 'Run ActiveX Controls And Plug-ins' to Enable.

Download and Install_Flash_Player.

I already have the latest version of flash and it was installed and used without issue before I upgraded to IE9 (just a few minutes before in fact). Flash works fine if "ActiveX Filtering" is turned off. My security settings are already set to the settings you've suggested as well. What's the point of uninstalling and re-installing flash?

I tried as the article suggested but it didn't work as it should. I did left-click the blue circle icon and chose "Turn off ActiveX filtering" and despite the dialogue box closing with the Vista "action/wait icon," nothing changed. Meaning ActiveX filtering is enabled for all sites and no exception was made for YouTube.

1. Use the utility at Uninstall Flash Player | Windows to uninstall your existing Flash Player if you have one installed.
2. Install the latest version of Flash Player from Adobe Flash Player download.

Sometimes uninstalling & Reinstalling provide a better solution.

Good news...I've found a solution. :D

I was trying various settings in "Internet Options" in the "Advanced" tab, and when I selected "Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering*" and restarted IE9, I was able to turn on/off "ActiveX filtering" on a per-site basis by left-clicking on the blue circle icon in the address/search bar. Now I can still have "ActiveX filtering" enabled (globaly) and still watch videos on YouTube.

I then went back to the "Advaned" tab in "Internet Options" and unselected "Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering*" just for testing, but surprisingly the turn on/off "ActiveX filtering" on a per-site basis capability still remained. :huh:

I really don't know the internal mechanics of why/how toggling the GPU rendering fixed my issue, but I'm glad nonetheless. I hope this helps out anyone with similar issues.

Could be due o your older gpu not being able to render/accelerate video.

I.E. probablyh messed up, so by toggling the setting smartened it up.
