having trouble running flash on some web sites as a normal user

I'm not sure this is the proper thread or forum, so please direct me to the proper place, if necessary.

My system (MS Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit with 32 bit IE8) is having trouble running flash on some web sites as a normal user.

If I login as Administrator, the web sites with flash content run just fine.

As a normal user (and sometimes as Administrator), I constantly get errors in the status bar of IE. they seem to be javascript related, but I can't seem to figure out what the cause is.

I'm not javascript savvy at all. I know very little about web programming. I have tried setting IE security to default, and very low levels or adding web sites to the "trusted sites" group, but it doesn't seem to help.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Welcome
Try two simple things
First try to go to tools (on IE)
internet options
advanced
reset

Does it work now? If not try another browser
Firefox and Chrome are nice choices

If they run well in one account, the other may be corrupt. Open a new user account and try again.

Hi pvman,

I recommend you try installing the most recent version of Java to make sure that isn't the problem. If given the option, choose to install it for all users. Here's the procedure which includes a link to java to get the version applicable to your version of Vista and your computer: Install Java in Internet Explorer. Once done, reboot. Then see if the problem continues.

In any account with the problem, go to Tools / Internet Options / Advanced / Java and make sure the button to use Java is checked.

In any account with the problem, go to Tools / Internet Options / Security / Custom / scroll to Scripting and check the box to enable scripting of Java applets.

If that doesn't work, try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem. Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal status and reboot - this solution is not going to work.

Boot into Safe mode with networking and see if the problem occurs there. Either result helps us narrow down the search for the cause.

What security software are you using (name and version)? Briefly, and going only to trusted sites (like here or www.microsoft.com) - hopefully including one where the problem occurs but that you are certain beyond doubt that it is a safe site, disable the security software and see if the problem persists. Once confirmed one way or the other, re-enable the security software.

I hope this helps. If the problem persists, report any findings and the results of the procedures you tried (what you did and what happened). Please also include the exact word-for-word text of the error messages you are getting - if you get more than one, then try to include a representative sampling of those you are getting. This might help us a great deal in identifying the cause of the problem and possibly lead us more quickly to a solution.
