IE9 Thoughts

Hello all,

I did not notice any threads talking about their thoughts of IE9, so I decided to make one. Here you can discuss all of your thoughts, ideas, rants, suggestions, and any other topic pretaining to IE9.

I personally like it. I have been using Chrome for a while and decided to try the beta. I was actually impressed at the improvement over the other versions.

I'm curious as to what you guys are thinking, look forward to hearing your responces!

The install completely messed up my computer with some massive registry damage. I had to restore my entire SYSTEM and USERS hive! Apart from that, I am really impressed. Finally, an Internet Explorer that does not spend 2 minutes loading non existent toolbars. The only possible thing: I still do not like the Close Tabs dialogue. It is still not as immediately obvious, or clean, as the Firefox one.

I broke down and installed it (even though my instincts said it was not the smart thing to do I just had to see it). It installed with no difficulties (no registry problems or anything like that). I'm not certain I like the setup yet - it's a bit different and will take some time getting used to it. I don't know that I'd say it loaded up a whole lot faster (maybe a little). I don't like the fact that I can't put the Command Bar below the Favorites bar (at least I haven't yet figured out how to do it if it's possible). I don't care for the fact that the inactive tabs are so dimmed you can't read them (or the address bar either) - and I haven't yet figured out if that can be configured. But then again, I haven't even had time to visit the Internet Options Page - I just came right here to post (and I would prefer to be able to have a menu bar than using that wheel at the right instead - not sure if that can be changed yet).

I haven't found anything yet that makes me say "Wow, this is great and I'm glad I upgraded." So far it's just been a bit of annoyance at what is different and missing more than anything else. Perhaps I'll find some features I like better or at least grow accustomed to the new format. I have noticed when typing that occasionally a small cursor bar appears if I use the arrow keys to move the location and stop and then move on - one at every stop point and sometimes several more along the path - but they disappear as soon as I start typing again. I don't know what that means - but it is different (though only a very minor distraction).

No reason yet to uninstall it. I'll just keep playing with it and see what happens.

How in the heck do you create a new tab? I mean one that doesn't do anything but open up and await an entry in the address bar to go somewhere? I know it can be done by right clicking on a link and selecting open in new tab but I can't figure out how to get a new tab so I can type in another address (Nevermind - you right click on a current tab and click on new tab) or do a search that doesn't overwrite the page I'm working on (nevermind - I found the option that controls that).

Here's a new issue, every time I try to type a reason for editing, IE crashes!! It happens as soon as I type the first letter. Looks like I won't be putting in reasons until I figure this out or they release a revision or something.

I like it. running stable on my system.

I dont like the favourites bar, it looks like something out of windows 95. And who designed the back/forwards buttons?

This is only the first beta though, so stuff is bound to change. IE8 beta 2 changed massively compared to beta 1, so heres hoping.

Josh, where is it failing? Will it not install or will it install and then not work? What happens when you try - what does it do or not do?

Fieseler, Hi - nice to meet you. I've already reported my editing problem as feedback - and I expect to submit more. If you don't like the buttons or the favorites bar (which pretty much looks like the IE8 version to me), then you need to submit feedback if you want them to change it. Yes, I realize they're going to get millions of feedback submissions and can't deal with all of them and won't want to with many of them, but it's sort of like voting - even though you know your state is going to go for the Democratic candidate and you prefer the Libertarian, you still go an vote because it's the only way to be heard even if they don't listen. I even let them record the steps so they could see the problem occur.

Is this reason for Editing thing happening to everyone/anyone else using it or do I have a problem that's unique to me? Also related, sometimes it indicates I've made an edit with the time & all (but no reason) and sometimes it doesn't indicate any edit occurred at all - even deleting previously reported edits at times.

And I just discovered I can't open Internet Options on any tab in the Window where IE crashed and then reset the Tab. But if I go to another Window, I can open it. So the crash somehow also disabled access to Internet Options. Too bad I already submitted the feedback on it.

I just tried it several more times and get the same problem (but I can see you obviously don't - dang it! - sorry, not wishing the problem on you but wishing everyone had it so it would get to the top of their list). I heard there's a compatibility setting somewhere here (not Vista's compatibility mode, but something for IE9 specifically) but I can't find where I read it or where it is. Any ideas?

Oh and instead of Microsoft Connect, here just click on the wheel to the far upper right and there's a send feedback link which is much better and easier to use (and gets it directly to the right people and can even take screenshots to see the problem occur).

Well Basically I open it and then it becomes Unstable and it says that Internet Explorer isn't working properly and then reloads a Webpage and then Stops Working

And it turns into a Cycle then After about 15 "Cycles" It gets shutdown by DEP

Yes, but that links straight to Microsoft Connect. Because I have permission to view your bug report, I know that you selected "Make my report available to other Connect users" or similar.

I also have made a report: 30 Windows suddenly opened up in the Taskbar, but nothing happens when you click on them. The original window still worked nicely though. I know what you mean about errors being related to current config, and something is different between out two machines.

Further down, where my response gets complicated, Firefox word wraps, and keeps things all nice, but IE9 just blows the board out of proportion.

EEKS! At least it seems like it did word wrap even if it blew the post all the way over to the right. There ARE some bugs in this program and that's a fact. I wonder if people without IE9 (I mean still using IE8) see it the same way?

I discovered the same problem with the edit reason box also occurs with the delete reason box.

If too much more of this happens, I'm switching back - but for now, it's only minor things that I can live with so I'll keep at it.

And this is the reason for browser coding standards. They are hard to maintain, but ensure that a website looks the same on all browsers. It WILL get better with each beta, as they implement more and more standards. We have to give it time

Now the edit reason box (and I assume the delete reason box as well though I haven checked) works fine - perhaps all it wanted was a reboot. Still getting the strange little lines when using the arrow keys to move through the post, but as they go away as soon as I start typing and don't really interfere with my ability to read it, it's a very minor issue. Otherwise (knock on wood), it seems to be doing fine. Still haven't figured out how to get back the menu bar (suspect it can't be done). Still haven't figured out how to get the Command bar below the Favorite Links bar (no idea there unless the links bar is programmed to be on the bottom no matter what) - tried every combination of adding/removing them and every way to move them manually and just can't make it happen. Can get then on the same horizontal together, but if I want them separated, can't get Command below Favorites. Not a big deal - and maybe intentional on their part (but it wasn't a problem in IE8 as that's how I had it setup there and would prefer it but I can live with it for sure). Getting more used to it now and while I've yet to find a reason to say it is better (different - yes, but so far nothing I've found better) I'm not as uncomfortable as I was at first. I wonder how they'll mess things up with the next release - LOL!

I have no clue about your issue, but it sounds much more serious than what we're experiencing (though trashing Richard's registry didn't sound so good either). I'd try uninstalling and re-installing to see if that helps - I don't think the IE7 or IE8 troubleshooting tricks will work here (and you probably haven't added any toolbars or add-ons but some may have carried over from IE8 so you might try running it in no add-ons mode to see if that solves the problem - if so, then some add-on (maybe a toolbar or something) in IE8 that carried over may be causing the problem even though it worked in IE8 - I did notice my Windows Live Toolbar carried over so I assume other add-ons did as well).

Hello all!

Josh, I encountered your problem, but I fixed it with the help of somebody elses post. I implore you NOT to try it, as it seems to be some error that the installer has encountered. I have not yet seen anybody encounter this error, follow this fix, and everything go correctly. Unless you are very lucky, following these instructions will break your computer:

Follow this path on Vista32:

Computer/C:/users/xxxxxx/AppData/Local/Temp/IE9xxxx.tmp folder and open it.


You should see IE9-netutral.Downloaded.msu


Double click on it and install it (it takes a bit).


That's it. Once it's done - out of nowhere - my Internet Explorer Opened and it was Version 9 BETA.


Don't ask me why or how I figured it out, but I just tried it and it worked!

I have seen registry corruption (sometimes as bad as mine), broken Windows Mail, and general errors, that probably come from registry damage. IE9 does not want to install on your computer. Please don't force it on as I and many other have, quite yet.

Thanks, Richard. That tutorial led me to another which was specifically for adding the menu bar in IE9 with a REG button. When I did it nothing happened. I opened a new window and still no menu bar. Then I closed all open Windows and opened a new IE window and there was my precious menu bar just where I wanted it. You've been given credit where credit is due as this was one of the items I missed the most between IE8 and IE9 and I very much appreciate getting it back and never thought to look for a tutorial as I assumed IE9 was too new for them to have created any yet - but they are right on top of things (as I should have realized by now).

I also suggest you follow Richard's advice. I've been to my former forum (which is much more active than this one) and read all sorts of horror stories about IE9 installation problems -and not just with IE9 but what it did to Vista (and the registry) during or after the install - and in some cases a System Restore didn't resolve it (most were in process - I didn't see any that had successfully been resolved yet except by System Restore when it worked). Frankly, I'm a bit shocked I had the nerve to try it myself as I'm usually much more cautious and rarely try betas (especially after reading what I'd been reading about this one) but I guess I lucked out (so far at least). It probably is because of different systems or OS versions or installed software or installed add-ons or who knows what. But if you're having this kind of difficulty, it really isn't worth the risk. As I've said, I haven't found a single thing that makes me say "wow, this is better than IE8" so you aren't missing much IMHO and can afford to wait for a release that installs cleanly.

I thank yee very much! Anyway, I am a bit of a dare devil when is comes to betas, and alphas, and pre-alphas! So I re-installed IE9! Early day, but no (detected!) problems quite yet! I made sure I had document backups, System Restore points, and ERUNT backups. Just hoping that I find out about issues sooner rather than later, so that a registry restore is actually feasible! Was I sensible!?

If the installation had trashed my system and registry, I probably wouldn't have even considered trying it again - but you took good precautionary steps and this time it seems to have worked right (I assume the problems you had before started almost immediately so the fact that you've been OK for a while - even if only a short while - is an excellent sign). I'm beginning to suspect that there's a problem with the installation program (possibly not even with IE9 itself) which sometimes works fine (as in my case and your latest case) and sometimes causes some or great harm (as in your original case and Josh's case) - but I haven't a clue how to figure out if it's going to work or not in advance. If there's a common thread, it's so far quite elusive.

To be honest, if it wasn't already done, I don't know that I'd still have the nerve to try - but I'm glad I did because now I'll be better equipped to answer IE9 questions in the Forums as I have it, am using it, and can test on it. On the other hand, I almost can't remember how IE8 looked any more (LOL!).

Yeah! IE8 was so slow to start up that it was a disaster when I opened a .gif file and IE8 started booting. IE9 is pretty good - certainly good startup speeds. I have found a few bugs, to be expected, but nothing bad at all. The installer does seem to have a few (big) issues though, particularly with some Vista machines. None of the last symptoms have manifested themselves, so I think that I am fine, just I am not going to delete those backups! Anyway, I never would, my hard disk drive is plenty big enough. They manifested themselves on the first restart, so I really think I am alright this time.

I have to say that the Microsoft betas are pretty polished as a general rule. Some of the pre-alpha automatic detection and power deletion malware tools *niemiro* remembers some interesting deletion moments!
