There have been a LOT of reports of it not working on Vista, including my machine. What is happening, exactly?

well it downloads from the microsoft site but before it installs it sends me to another page to download a update so i try and install the update and after trying to install this windows tells me it is not for this operating system i will try again and take some screen shots

Don't worry about the screenshots. That is exactly what happened to my computer. If I get a fix, I will post it, but probably the best thing to do would be to wait a few days for Microsoft to iron out the bugs.

okey dokey thanks for the info im away from home at the moment so when im back i will try explorer 9 on my windows 7 machine just to see how it has changed. i dont think my father is that worried about it that much for his laptop it just would be nice to see it working on a vista machine.:D

There has been progress. There is no definite fix at the moment, but here are some things that have worked. There have however, been reports of an IE 9 install breaking Windows Live email accounts.

1: Microsoft page: How to solve Internet Explorer 9 installation problems

2: Enable UAC before install.

3: Follow this path on Vista32:Computer/C:/users/xxxxxx/AppData/Local/Temp/IE9xxxx.tmp folder and open it.
You should see IE9-netutral.Downloaded.msu
Double click on it and install it (it takes a bit).

All in all, something will probably go wrong!

by all accounts the windows vista home basic x32 bit is that compatible?

Method 1: Make sure minimum Operating System requirements are met
Internet Explorer 9 has a minimum requirement for the following Operating Systems:
Windows Vista (x86 and x64) with Service Pack 2 (SP 2) or later versions
Windows 7 (x86 and x64) or later versions
Windows Server 2008 (x86 and x64) with Service Pack 2 (SP 2) or later versions
Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 or later versions
If you are running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 less than Service Pack 2, install the latest Service Pack.

Yes it is. Vista x86, Vista 32bit, and Vista x32 are all EXACTLY the same. They are just different names. They originated back from old architectures, and updates to that. It is very complex, but they are all EXACTLY the same, and supposedly supported

The alternative installer just hung (again!) on my copy of Vista. I will tell you what to do when I get it working on my machine.

I used the third method from my post (running files from the Temp folder) and it worked for me. I am now running IE9. Not quite sure what to make of it yet.

Oh shoot! IE9 has completely messed up my screen and everything. I am stuck in some very small resolution, but apparently I am in my normal resolution. What a massive mess Microsoft have made of IE9. In all seriousness, I would wait a couple of weeks.
